Police are to look into claims that Rochdale Council covered up allegations that late Liberal lawmaker Cyril Smith abused pupils at a local residential school, the BBC reported Sunday.
Greater Manchester police have already launched a probe into claims of abuse at Knowl View school, which closed in 1992.
That could now be widened if there is any evidence of a cover up by the council, which is also to carry out its own investigation into the claims, according to the BBC.
Smith died in 2010, aged 82, and his family have always denied claims of sexual abuse that surfaced in the wake of the revelations against former BBC presenter Jimmy Savile.
Rochdale Council was one of the local authorities that ran the Knowl View school.
