British singing sensation Sam Smith turned his heartbreak into gold as he crooned to victory at the Grammy Awards.
The 22-year-old Londoner swept the major categories at the ceremony, scoring song of the year and record of the year for his smash hit Stay With Me, as well as best pop vocal album for In The Lonely Hour and the best new artist accolade.
Accepting his record of the year trophy, the overwhelmed singer said: “This is the best night of my life. I want to thank the man this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”
Sam’s impressive win is reminiscent of the success of fellow British singer Adele at the ceremony in 2012 when she also scored four gramophone gongs.
Earlier in the night he credited his success with staying true to himself. Collecting his award for pop vocal album he said: “Before I made this record I was doing everything to get my music heard. I tried to lose weight and I was making terrible music, and it was only after I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen.”
Sam defeated established artists including Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Pharrell Williams and Beck, as well as fellow British singer Ed Sheeran for his album of the year win.
He also triumphed over numerous number one singles including Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass and Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off to take home record of the year for Stay With Me (Darkchild version).
He topped off his triumphant night with a performance of hit song with Mary J Blige in front of a star-studded crowd at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.
It was also a winning night for Beyonce, who scored awards for best R&B performance and best R&B song for Drunk In Love with her husband Jay-Z, and best surround sound album for her self-titled record.
Speaking backstage whilst clutching his four trophies, Sam said it was awkward trying to juggle them all.
He added: “I feel like Kate Winslet at the Oscars right now.”
But instead of celebrating with champagne and haute cuisine he said the first thing on his wish list is fast food: “I need to go to In-N-Out Burger because I’ve been having a lot of green juice recently. This really is the best night of my life.”
Asked what could top this success he said: “A boyfriend would be nice,” adding he would like a man with patience who could clean all his Grammys.
Pharrell Williams, who last year caused a stir by sporting a large Vivienne Westwood hat on to the ceremony, sparked just as much chatter with his shorts suit. However the super-producer proved to be a winner on the night by taking home Grammys for best music video for his smash hit single Happy and best urban contemporary album for Girl.
Beck also had a triumphant night, surprising many to win album of the year over favourite Beyonce. He also took home best rock album for Morning Phase.
Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett were winners before the televised ceremony even begun, picking up best traditional pop album for their record of duets Cheek to Cheek, while Eminem won best rap album for The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
Comedian Joan Rivers, who died last September, won a posthumous Grammy for best spoken word album for Diary of a Mad Diva, a narration of her 12th book.
