Charles Bronson Guilty Of Attack On Governor

The prisoner formerly known as Charles Bronson has been sentenced to two years after pleading guilty to assaulting a prison governor.

The notorious inmate, who is already serving a life sentence after after kidnapping a prison art teacher 15 years ago,  sat in a secure dock surrounded by six prison guards.

When asked for his plea, the 61-year-old, who was immaculately dressed in a black suit and silver tie, said: “Guilty, but I don’t want to”.

However, the inmate now known as Charles Salvador told Amersham Crown Court he was determined to leave the violent legacy of Charles Bronson behind after changing his name by deed poll.

Since first going inside in 1974 for armed robbery, Salvador has become infamous for his violent behaviour, taking 11 hostages and carrying out nine rooftop sieges. 

But Judge Francis Sheridan said he accepted Salvador acted out of frustration when he attacked Governor Alan Parkins, leaving the officer with extensive bruising.

The attack happened in a TV room at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes on February 28 after a row about the withholding of Salvador’s mail, including some of his artwork.

CCTV footage played to the court showed the prisoner climbing over a table before putting his hands around the governor’s neck and wrestling him to the ground before other officers intervened.

Judge Sheridan told Salvador: “The Crown accepts you acted out of frustration. But the right way to challenge that is through the governor or the administrative courts of this country, not by taking the law I to your own hands.”

“I am going to ask the Inspectorate of Her Majesty’s Prisons to look at this case … to see if lessons can be learnt.”

After being given permission to address the court, Salvador spoke at length about his treatment inside and his conviction he would die behind bars.

He told Judge Sheridan: “I’ve been locked up for 40 years, 37 of them in solitary confinement and I’m sick of it. I’m burying Bronson once and for all”.

He described how HMP Woodhill had stopped 45 items of his mail including two letters from his mother

The court also heard the prison had now accepted the handling of his mail may not have been acceptable.

Salvador added: “I’ve had 11 hostages, seven of them were prison officers and they’ll never forget it.

“A lot of prison officers are now top bods – over the years I might have thrown a pot of **** over them, chinned them, taken them hostages and how I see it it’s just get back time.”
