Fox: Show tackles generation gap

Freddie Fox has said he thinks Russell T Davies’ new dramas Cucumber and Banana will help young gay people understand the older generation.

The Pride star – the son of actor Edward Fox and actress Joanna David – stars in the new crossover dramas from the creator of Queer As Folk. Cucumber, to be shown on Channel 4, is a drama about older gay men, while E4 spin-off series Banana follows the lives of a younger generation in the gay community.

Freddie said: “I think – of all ages probably being above the age of 16 – yes they will [enjoy both shows].

“And what’s more the young are the more socially accepting – they are of the gay community anyway – and so it’s sort of a show for them really – to see how older people still have these hang ups about gay, straight, bi, these definitions, these defining features of your personality, when they’re not.

“Younger people – it’s just another part and parcel of who you are, it doesn’t matter. So I think it’s for them to realise this is the generation you’re growing up into.”

Set in Manchester, 15 years on from Queer As Folk, eight-part drama Cucumber stars The Thick Of It’s Vincent Franklin as Henry Best, a man in his late 40s who is in a committed relationship with his long-term partner Lance, played by Cyril Nri.

When the couple experience relationship problems, Henry crosses over into the world of the younger gay community, in E4 spin-off Banana, featuring Freddie as one of the younger guys he meets.

Freddie said: “Russell, and I don’t use the term at all lightly, is a genius. And so to work with that calibre of writer, showrunner, creator, you’re very lucky and you’ve got to be on your top game from the start.

“So I was a little nervous, but he’s so warm, and supportive that you feel like you’re just dealing with one of your best mates all the time. So gradually the nerves bled away into something more creative and constructive.”
