Evacuation After Shopping Centre 'Gas Leak'

Dozens of people have been treated by paramedics after a suspected gas leak at a shopping centre near Southampton.

Sainsbury’s and M&S were among the shops evacuated at Hedge End retail park after people complained of feeling unwell.

Four fire engines and a hazardous materials team were called to the scene, where they were joined by police officers and paramedics.

Some 62 people received medical treatment, although no one was admitted to hospital.

The alarm was raised when customers started coughing and complaining of sore throats while they were queuing at the checkouts in Sainsbury’s.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the supermarket and traced the leak to a faulty fridge.
