Karlberg leads CIMB Classic by 2 strokes



KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg shot a 7-under 65 for a two-stroke lead after Thursday’s opening round of the CIMB Classic, a joint PGA Tour and Asian Tour event in Malaysia.


Karlberg, who is one of ten Asian Tour players in the 78-man field, birdied his final two holes to at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club to lead three players on 67: Americans Billy Hurley III and Brian Stuard, along with Angelo Que of the Philippines.


In a round that was interrupted by a two-hour delay due to thunderstorms, eight players were tied a stroke further back, including defending champion Ryan Moore who finished with four successive birdies.


Sergio Garcia, the top-ranked player, was among a large group at 3-under with Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa.
