We all know that playing video games for too long can be bad for you. But now research has suggested that intensively playing your games console can have some weird effects in the real world.
They call it “game transfer phenomena”.
What are the symptoms?
Video gamers have reported hearing sound effects such as weapons, explosions, vehicles groans, screams or breathing long after they’ve finished playing. Other known symptoms include hearing beeping, percussive sounds and lasers.
When does it strike?
A common time is when gamers are drifting off to sleep. More worryingly the noises can also occur during day-to-day activities such as walking or even driving.
What’s the evidence?
Researchers at Nottingham Trent University’s International Gaming Research Unit started by trawling video games forums online for a sample of keen gamers. They found 1,244 people who had suffered “game transfer phenomena”.
This includes anyone who’s found video games impacting their behaviour or experiences in real life. Of this number, 155 (that’s 12%, or one in eight) claimed their experiences involved hearing noises from the games they play.
What do the experts say?
Angelica Ortiz de Gortari, a psychology researcher in Nottingham Trent University’s School of Social Sciences, insisted the research could help some gamers.
“It’s important to help gamers understand their experiences since re-experiencing sounds and voices may provoke distress, especially when associated with dangerous situations in the game,” she said.
Is there a cure, doc?
“Most of these phenomena are short-lasting, temporary, and resolve of their own accord,” explained Professor Mark Griffiths.
And if they don’t?
“The best way (to stop the effects) for the tiny minority that may have longer lasting phenomena is to simply cut down the amount they play.” You heard the man. Drop the controller and step away from the Xbox.
