Armed soldiers will have a more visible presence at Whitehall following fears about ceremonial guards being targeted by terrorists.
Troops carrying rifles have been seen for the first time outside Horse Guards Parade as Westminster was put on alert after the shootings in Canada .
Thousands of tourists gather there every day to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony.
The entrance, part of the Buckingham Palace estate, is usually watched by two ceremonial guards on horseback and two on foot.
However, soldiers in combat fatigues have been stationed there for the past two days as part of a more “overt” presence.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson told Sky News: “The MoD routinely reviews the security arrangements at all of its establishments.
“Clearly we do not comment publicly on the substance of these.”
Last week, Corporal Nathan Cirillo, 24, was shot in the back as he stood on guard at the war memorial in Ottawa.
The gunman, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, went on to storm Canada’s parliament complex before he was shot dead.
