Bono: We've Scrapped Several Recorded Albums

U2 frontman Bono says the band has recorded “several” albums in the past five years but discarded them because they weren’t good enough.

He told Q magazine: “Rumour has it we haven’t made a U2 album in the last five years.

“We have. We just didn’t release them because we were waiting for something that would be as good as the best we’ve ever done.

“That was the standard. Or else, why bother?”

He said the band had spent two years working on their new album Songs Of Innocence, which was given away free to 500 million iTunes customers last month in conjunction with the new iPhone launch.

He told the magazine he was still “against free music”, emphasising that the release was part of a deal with Apple.

“We’re not giving it away,” he said.

“Apple are giving it away. This is really important.”

He also said that the current music charts do not accurately measure what music is popular.

“The charts are broken,” he said.

“They do not measure what people are listening to and they do not measure people’s passion in music. They do not measure people’s desire to pay for that music and they should be respected for that.”
