WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has announced the first death of a U.S. military member involved in the campaign against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

Lance Cpl. Sean P. Neal of Riverside, California, died Thursday in Baghdad from what the Pentagon called a noncombat-related incident. It said in its announcement Friday that the incident is under investigation.

The 19-year-old soldier was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment as part of a Marine task force.

The U.S. military campaign, called Operation Inherent Resolve, began Aug. 8.
