Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan has issued an encouraging update on the status of the band’s next record (via Facebook), saying the group will enter the studio “soon.” In addition to sharing the singer’s news that the LP’s songs are congealing into shape, the band also shared a photo of the group ”playing” instruments that are not their own (Keenan is behind the drum kit).
“I’ve been making regular trips to [Los Angeles] to check on the writing progress of my Tool brethren,” the singer said. “Things are progressing nicely. Slowly, but definitely progressing. Nothing is recorded yet, but the guys are confident that the pieces are coming together swimmingly and will be ready for me to begin writing melodies and content ‘soon.’
“I’m as anxious to get this album completed as everyone else,” he continued, “but as history will show, you can’t rush these gents. Patience is gold in this sound mine. In the meantime, as always, other things are simultaneously occurring. Life is too short not to create something with every breath we draw.”
Last year, the group revealed that a complicated, time-consuming lawsuit has been preventing them from creating a follow-up to 2006′s 10,000 Eyes. At the time, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey told Rolling Stone they had more than enough raw material to make a record – they just had to organize it into songs.
“It’s all a little more ‘metal’ sounding, if I may,” Carey said of the new music at the time. “I’m having fun drumming on it. There is one [song]… that’s pretty gnarly with some good double-kick [drumming] going on in it.”
“It’s not good when it’s done, it’s done when it’s good,” Jones said. “We’ve been working at our own pace, but we don’t want to put out something and go, ‘This song’s fine, just put it out.’ I’m never gonna put something out where later, I go, ‘Fuck, I wish we hadn’t done that.’ We’re just not going to settle for doing anything but our best work, and the fans appreciate that.”
