Springboks hooker Strauss suspended for 3 weeks

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (AP) — South Africa hooker Adriaan Strauss has been suspended for three weeks for an illegal tackle, ruling him out of the first three games of the Springboks’ season.

Strauss will miss the game against a World XV in Cape Town on June 7 and two tests against Wales on consecutive weekends after that.

Strauss was sin-binned for a tip tackle in his Cheetahs team’s 33-0 loss to the Stormers in Super Rugby on Saturday. A judicial officer for southern hemisphere rugby body SANZAR ruled Tuesday that because the Cheetahs have a bye in Super Rugby this weekend, Strauss’ ban will start for the World XV game.

Strauss was suspended up to and including June 21. He can return for the one-off test against Scotland a week later.
