Man held over 'volatile' substance

A 55-year-old man has been arrested and up to 200 people evacuated from their homes after a substance police described as “potentially volatile” was found in a flat.

Derbyshire police said the substance was discovered during a search of a flat at Belvoir Crescent in Newhall.

Homes within 100 yards of Belvoir Crescent were evacuated and police said they were working with the county council to house the displaced residents.

Superintendent Paul Markham, who is in charge of the operation, said: “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter and we are hoping that people will not be inconvenienced for too long.

“The evacuation is purely a precaution to ensure everybody’s safety and residents will be allowed back home as soon as possible.”
