“Super Saturday” gold medallist Greg Rutherford will leap for the top of the podium at the Commonwealth Games today as he attempts to match his feats from the London Olympics.
The long jumper, distance runner Mo Farah and heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill all picked up gold in the space of an hour in an unforgettable evening of athletics for Great Britain at the Olympic stadium two years ago.
But Rutherford is the only one of the trio competing at the Glasgow Games after Farah pulled out due to illness and Ennis-Hill stepped away from the sport to give birth to her son Reggie.
He was in fine form yesterday when he took just a single jump of 8.05m to reach the final, despite having his sleep disturbed in the athletes’ village by noisy competitors last week.
He tweeted his frustration on Saturday, saying: “Being in an athletes village is great until the ignorant athletes make more noise than a herd of elephants startled in a china shop.”
Yesterday the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry caught up with the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt as they met athletes competing at Glasgow 2014.
The royal trio and the Jamaican sprint star chatted and posed for photographs in the athletes’ village in Glasgow as hundreds of people gathered to catch a glimpse of the visitors.
They were joined on their tour of the site by the country’s most successful Olympian Sir Chris Hoy, who is also chieftain of the village.
Earlier in the day William and Harry showed off their football skills as they visited a coaching project which offers young people a chance to gain work experience and training in community sports coaching. Across the city, Kate attended a reception hosted by SportsAid.
There are 19 gold medals for the taking at the Games today, including those in athletics, artistic gymnastics, weightlifting and wrestling.
Diving also gets under way at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, though Tom Daley is not competing today.
Yesterday England’s men’s team rounded off the action in the pool at Tollcross when they won the last swimming race of the Games, taking gold in the men’s 4 x 100 metres medley relay.
England’s women’s also took silver in their 4 x 100 metres medley relay final.
Georgia Davies won gold for Wales in the 50 metres backstroke while England’s Lauren Quigley took silver, 0.13 seconds behind Davies.
Jazz Carlin of Wales secured silver in the 400 metres freestyle while team-mate Daniel Jervis claimed bronze in the 1,500 metres freestyle.
English teenager Ben Proud earlier claimed his second gold medal of Glasgow 2014 after edging out a strong Australian challenge in the 50 metres freestyle final.
There was success in the pool for the host nation when Daniel Wallace achieved a hat trick by taking silver in the men’s 200 metres individual medley, following his gold in the 400 metres individual medley and 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay silver.
In the athletics England’s Laura Weightman landed her maiden major championship medal by winning silver in the 1,500 metres at a raucous Hampden Park.
It was one of five silvers claimed by England’s athletes yesterday, with Laura Samuel in the triple jump, Will Sharman in the 110 metres hurdles, Ashley Bryant in the decathlon and Nicholas Miller in the hammer also making the podium.
England’s men’s gymnastics team won gold while Scotland took silver in the event at the Hydro.
It was a successful day for the host nation, when the gymnastics silver pushed them above their medal record of 33 won at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986.
By the end of the day’s action Scotland were in fourth place with 37 medals and 13 golds, while England were second with 93 medals and 33 gold.
Wales were in ninth place with four golds and 27 medals and Northern Ireland equal 18th with two medals – a silver and a bronze.
