Benedict Cumberbatch Is Officially Playing Doctor Strange

Some mood music:

After an unbearably long negotiation process, the casting that everyone wanted to happen has come to pass.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be Doctor Strange for Marvel’s November 2016 film. The studio confirmed the news on Marvel.com.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige in a released statement. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

In addition to Cumberbatch, Scott Derrickson is directing, with a script from Jon Spaihts. It’s been a long road to this official confirmation, including the time Cumberbatch totally dodged our questions at the “Penguins of Madagascar” junket:

And of course there was the time way back at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con that the actor opened up about the fan campaign for the role (while dodging our questions):

But now, he can’t dodge any longer, as what the internet wanted aligned with what Marvel wanted in the best way possible.
