Tory vow to defend school spending

Conservatives will protect spending per pupil at state schools in England if they win the general election, David Cameron has announced.

And the Prime Minister said that, with numbers of pupils rising, the policy commitment will mean more money going into schools overall.

The announcement came as the Prime Minister set out plans to sack headteachers at coasting schools in what he termed an “all-out war on mediocrity” .

The continuation of the “ring-fence” for school spending matches a Tory promise to protect NHS funding will put further pressure on unprotected areas of government spending, such as local government and the police, which will be expected to bear the burden of Whitehall cuts.

Speaking at the Kingsmead academy school in Enfield, north London, Mr Cameron said: “Good school places need money and we will make sure our schools are properly funded.

“Today, I can make this commitment about Conservative plans. We’ve demonstrated in the past five years that we can protect the schools budget while reducing the deficit and we will do so again.

“So I can tell you, with a Conservative government, the amount of money following your child into the school will not be cut. In Treasury speak, flat cash per pupil.

“And as the number of pupils in our schools is going up, that means the amount of money going into our schools will do so too.”
