North Korean leader says purge was a cleansing of 'filth'

By Ju-min Park

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made his first reference to the execution of his powerful uncle in a New Year’s address, saying the reclusive state’s ruling party had become stronger after it was purged of “factional filth.”

And he called for better relations with South Korea, warning that another war on the Korean peninsula would cause a massive nuclear disaster that would hit the United States.

Kim, the third generation of his family to rule North Korea, did not refer by name to his uncle Jang Song Thaek, who was executed last month in a rare public purge for crimes against the ruling Workers’ Party and harming national interest.

“Our party took a firm measure to get rid of factional filth that permeated the party,” Kim said in a broadcast on state television that appeared to be pre-recorded, without showing if he was speaking to an audience.

“Our unity strengthened hundredfold and party and revolutionary lines became more solid by purging the anti-party and anti-revolutionary faction,” Kim said.

After the sudden death of Kim’s father in December 2011, Jang acted as regent to his young nephew as Kim established himself in power. With the purge, Kim may have chosen to remove the only man who may have posed any real threat to him.

Kim’s call for improved ties with the South followed a threat from Pyongyang last month that it could strike Seoul without notice.

“It is time to end abuse and slander that is only good for doing harm … We will try hard to improve North-South ties,” Kim said, adding that “dark clouds of nuclear war constantly hovered over the Korean peninsula”.

“If there ever is once again war on this land, it will bring about an enormous nuclear disaster and the United States will not be spared from it,” he said.

The two Koreas remain technically at war under a truce that ended the 1950-53 Korean War. The United States maintains 28,500 troops in South Korea in joint defence against the North.

Robert Carlin, a contributor to 38 North, a project of John Hopkins University’s U.S.-Korea Institute, noted that so far Pyongyang’s treatment of South Koran President Park Geun-hye had avoided the relentless personal attacks on her predecessor.

“Many times over the past 30 or 40 years, the two sides have started dialogue by agreeing to stop slander of the other,” Carlin said.

“It’s a relatively easy and verifiable first step. By raising it, Kim would appear to be signalling that he’s prepared to start off with something concrete, if modest, in order to open the door.”

CONSTRUCTION PLANS

State media reported on Tuesday that Kim rode on a ski lift at the Masik ski resort, a widely publicised public project where the North expects up to 5,000 skiers a day when it opens this year.

Kim has been pushing for massive projects throughout the country that go beyond the ski resort, pleasure parks and apartment blocks reported by state media, largely with the financial aid of its sole main ally China.

On Wednesday, he emphasized his eagerness to pursue more construction projects.

“This year, we should open up a new period of prosperity in construction. Construction is an important frontline to set grounds for the strong nation and people’s happiness,” he said.

'Vampire Academy' Exclusive Clip: Lissa's Baby Has Herpes

High school sucks. If we didn’t already know that firsthand ourselves, we’d have learned it from the neon-hued posters for the upcoming movie “Vampire Academy.”

Starring Zoey Deutch and Lucy Fry as BFFs/bodyguard and royal protectee, “Vampire Academy” seeks out a different kind of teen vampire story. Step aside, Bella and Edward, there’s a new, sassy breed of bloodsucker in town. Rose (Deutch) is half-vampire, half-mortal, all devoted to protecting Lissa (Fry), who is of royal vampiric blood. This protection, as you’re about to see, extends to bratty classmates (one named Mia Rinaldi, played by Sami Gayle) at St. Vladimir’s Academy, where the two go to school.

As if the movie’s first trailer didn’t already have us excited enough, MTV News is happy to debut a brand-new clip from the movie.

Take a trip back to high school, where unoriginal puns on names stand in for insults (“Why are you Dragomirs such drags?”), boy drama abounds and there will always be a breathless wannabe trying to tear others down with gossip. One thing that seems to be different at a school for vampires: what constitutes the “high road.” Oh, and it’s likely that none of your classmates claimed to have “water magic” they could use against you. There’s that too.

Check out the clip above.

“Vampire Academy,” starring Zoey Deutch and Lucy Fry, hits theaters February 14, 2014.

Cameron To Scots: 'Please Don't Leave'

David Cameron has used his New Year message to highlight the importance of Scotland‘s vote on independence, telling Scots: “We want you to stay.”

As the countdown to the referendum begins, Mr Cameron said the outcome of the vote on September 18 matters to everyone in the UK.

It is an important date in the history of the United Kingdom, he said, and urged “the nations” to stay together.

“The referendum vote will be the biggest decision Scotland has ever been asked to make. The outcome matters to all of us, wherever we live in the UK,” Mr Cameron said.

“This is not a vote for the next few years but a vote that could change our country forever.

“Our family of nations is at its best when we work together with shared interest and common purpose.

“This year let the message go out from England, Wales and Northern Ireland to everyone in Scotland: we want you to stay and together we can build an even stronger United Kingdom for our children and grandchildren.”

Scotland First Minister Alex Salmond gave the opposite view in his New Year message.

He said that a “Yes” vote would ease a generation of mothers back to work through universal childcare, making Scotland the best country in the world to raise families.

Mr Cameron also used his message to say that the UK Government’s New Year’s resolution was to stick to the long term economic plan.

The economy is turning a corner, he claimed, with businesses opening up, people getting decent jobs and factories making British goods and selling them to the world.

“That’s why this year, 2014, we are not just going to stick to the plan. We are going to redouble our efforts to deliver every part of it, to benefit the whole country and secure a better future for everyone,” he said.

“We’ll continue with the vital work on the deficit. We’ve reduced it by a third already and this year we will continue that difficult work to safeguard our economy for the long term, keep mortgage rates low and help families across Britain.”

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Suit Up In First Look: Take A Peek

Happy New Year, Marvel fans!

Disney on Tuesday released a first look at their highly anticipated “Guardians of the Galaxy,” offering a sneak peek at the intergalactic film. In the image, Chris Pratt lines up with Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and WWE superstar Dave Bautista.

And if you’ve been waiting with bated breath for an official synopsis of the film, take a deep inhale. It’s here:

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Disney also unveiled its official 2014 film slate, with “Guardians of the Galaxy” set to hit theaters in the heart of Blockbuster season on August 1. Also on tap for the new year is “Need For Speed” (out March 14), “Muppets Most Wanted” (March 24), “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (April 4), “Maleficent” (May 30) and “Into the Woods” (December 25).

In a recent interview with MTV News, Saldana, the actress behind Gamora, called “Guardians” “a new way to view superheroes.”

“I love, sometimes, the consistency of what the classics have left behind, but I need innovation. You can only have so much of ‘I’ll save you,’ ” she said. “After a while, it’s like, ‘Oh god. Does he go to the bathroom? Is he hungry? Does he cry? Does he feel?’ Not only do we cover that, but we’re making heroes out of thieves, and they’re Robin Hoods. These characters are absolutely amazing, and they have a full-blown redemption.”

And her praises don’t stop there.

“To be able sink your teeth into such meaty characters and to be part of such a story that is very unique and obviously has everything that I love,” she continued. “It has space. It has a kooky director. It literally has cojones. It has amazing actors that you would have never thought to put them together. Somehow, we’re all here giving 150 percent and loving the story that we’re doing.”

Kerry launches 2014 with all-out bid for Mideast peace

US Secretary of State John Kerry hurtles into 2014 with a trip to the Middle East Wednesday, hoping to make this the year Israel and the Palestinians seal a long-elusive peace deal.

Waving aside skeptics, the top diplomat will embark on his 10th tour to Israel and the West Bank aiming to hammer out a framework to guide the final tough months of talks.

After getting the two sides back to the negotiating table in 2013 after a three-year hiatus, Kerry was “starting the new year with a special effort to try to move the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations forward,” a senior State Department official said.

After months of intense, secretive talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, Kerry is hoping to set out an agreed framework that will establish a vision of what a final peace deal would look like.

It would provide “a basis upon which one could negotiate the final peace treaty because the outlines or the guidelines for what the final deal would look like would be agreed upon, and then you would work intensively to fill out the details,” according to the same official.

Both sides have now held about 20 rounds of direct talks since they resumed negotiations in July, agreeing to keep talking until the end of April.

But the deadline is looming, and despite Israel’s release on Tuesday of a third tranche of Palestinian prisoners, there have been little signs of progress amid growing pessimism Kerry’s push will just join the long litany of failed US peace efforts.

US officials cautioned they were not expecting any breakthroughs on this trip, which comes just as Abbas threatened to take legal and diplomatic action to halt Israeli settlement building.

Speaking in Ramallah late Tuesday, Abbas said: “We will not remain patient as the settlement cancer spreads, especially in (east) Jerusalem.”

“The settlement activity that has been going on has created a lot of questions on the Palestinian side and in the international community about the intentions of the government of Israel,” the State Department official conceded, asking to remain anonymous.

“It’s both the building and the planning that creates a great deal of heartburn,” the official added, reiterating the US position that settlements are illegitimate.

Kerry and his team, led by special envoy and former ambassador Martin Indyk, hope to have the framework in place soon, addressing all core issues including the contours of the borders of a future Palestinian state, the fate of Jerusalem claimed by both sides as a capital, and Palestinian refugees.

Having outlined “the areas of agreement between the parties and overlap, and the areas of disagreement,” Kerry was now seeking to test ideas to bridge the gaps.

The aim was for him “to climb with the two leaders to the top of the hill and be able to share with them the view of what’s on the other side, what peace will look like in terms of all of the core issues that have to be resolved,” the US official said.

Also at stake is the question of Israel’s security, as the Jewish state insists on maintaining a presence in the Jordan Valley under any peace deal, something vigorously opposed by the Palestinians.

Kerry will have to quell tensions after an Israeli ministerial committee on Sunday gave initial approval to a bill annexing Jordan Valley settlements, in a largely symbolic move expected to be shot down by the government.

But the 70-year-old former senator has proved persistent and stubborn in his efforts, earning grudging respect from the White House during his first months in the job.

In 2013 he also helped broker a deal with Russia to rid Syria of its chemical weapons by June, and an interim accord to rein in Iran’s suspect nuclear program.

Kerry’s team has had to persuade the globe-trotter to take a break over the Christmas holidays, the US official revealed.

“There’s one thing for certain: He has need for speed and he has a sense of urgency… a real sense of the need to strike while the iron is hot.”

Sheridan wants to find love in 2014

Sheridan Smith has revealed one of her New Year’s resolutions is to try and find a new man.

The 32-year-old actress – currently appearing in The Harry Hill Movie and new BBC drama The 7:39 – has not been in a long-term relationship since 2010 and hopes to find love this year.

Sheridan revealed: ” My New Year’s resolutions are to stop smoking, that’s been my new year’s resolution for the last few years, but this year I’m going to do it. Spend more time with my family, hopefully, more work, keep grafting and plodding along I guess… Who knows maybe I’ll meet a fella!”

Meanwhile, 64-year-old Jim Broadbent, who also appears in The Harry Hill Movie, is resolving to be more healthy.

He said his New Year’s resolution was to: “Try to stay fit… whatever that takes. Walk and eat more sensibly.”

But Captain America star Hayley Atwell wants to take things easier in 2014.

She said: “My New Year’s resolution is probably relax more. I thought instead of being hard on myself this year I should do the opposite and my New Year’s resolution is to try and not be so hard on myself.”

And Myleene Klass wants to finish the New Year’s resolution she started in 2013.

She revealed: “It’s the same as last year but we’ve halfway got there. I want to learn Spanish. We’re working on it.”

2.1 million sign up for 'Obamacare' health insurance

More than 2 million people have signed up for private health insurance through President Barack Obama‘s signature reform after a botched rollout, the US government said Tuesday.

The Affordable Care Act, widely known as Obamacare, is designed to offer insurance to millions of Americans who have never been able to secure it before — some because of pre-existing health conditions like heart disease that insurers were unwilling to cover.

But its launch was hobbled by technical problems, casting doubt that the government could reach its 7 million enrollment goal by the end of March.

Since October 1, more than 2.1 million have secured coverage via Web portals set up by the federal government in 36 states and by local authorities in 14 others, Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters in a conference call.

The bulk of the enrollment took place in December after a litany of glitches with the government website, healthcare.gov, which wasn’t able to handle the full onslaught of users until the end of November.

The rocky start has played into the hands of Republicans who say the federal government has no business intervening in the private health care market and and should not be dictating health choices to Americans.

In addition, 3.9 million people found out via the sites that, due to the reform, they were eligible for coverage through public health insurance programs including Medicaid, which is geared toward the poorest, according to figures from October and November.

The government did not specify how many of the 6 million people total had previously not had health insurance — a figure that will be key in determining the success of the reform deemed Obama’s top domestic achievement to date. In particular, it was unclear how many simply renewed their coverage.

Some 50 million people currently do not have health insurance in the United States.

Those individuals who signed up for insurance before December 24 on the federal site will have coverage as of Wednesday, New Year’s Day.

“Tomorrow, January 1st, will be a new day in health care for millions of Americans,” Sebelius said.

Bone marrow donor resolutions urged

The parents of a seriously ill girl have called for people to consider becoming bone marrow donors when they make their new year’s resolutions, saying it could have the potential to save their daughter’s life.

Seven year-old Rhiane Francois is undergoing chemotherapy to treat leukaemia – b ut if the drugs are not effective she will need a bone marrow transplant.

Because the youngster has Mauritian and Asian heritage it could be hard to pair her to a donor as a matching donor is most likely to come from a similar ethnic background, blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan said.

Her parents Tanisha and Jean-Claude, from Whitley, near Coventry, have called on potential donors to sign up to the charity’s bone marrow register.

“When Rhiane was diagnosed, our world turned upside down and it felt like someone had stabbed me in the heart,” Rhiane’s mother Tanisha said.

“You just never think that something like this is going to happen to your child.

“If Rhiane needs a bone marrow transplant, we will need to find a matching donor quickly to save her life.

“That’s why we are urging everyone eligible to join Anthony Nolan’s bone marrow register now, especially people from ethnic minorities. You could be a matching donor for Rhiane or someone else out there who desperately needs a transplant.”

The youngster was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in September last year.

Doctors at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where she is being treated, have warned that if her course of chemotherapy does not work she will need a bone marrow transplant.

Anthony Nolan is scouring its register to see whether there is a suitable match. But the charity warned that it “urgently” needs people from black, Asian and other ethnic minority backgrounds to come forward because ethnic minority donors are “under-represented” on the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register.

The seven-year-old will find out in February whether she needs a transplant.

“It’s hard to think of a more worthwhile new year’s resolution than signing up to save the life of a stranger in their time of need, and unlike many resolutions, it’s so simple to do,” said Bhaveshree Chandegra, Asian campaign recruitment manager at Anthony Nolan.

“Joining the bone marrow register is very easy and many people don’t realise that donating is so straightforward – in 90% of cases, it’s a similar procedure to giving blood.”

Dr Mark Velangi, consultant paediatric haematologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, said: “We know from first-hand experience the difficulty we can face in the search for donors from ethnic minority backgrounds and are so proud of Rhiane and her family for continuing to raise awareness of bone marrow donation.”

:: People aged 16 to 30 in good health can visit www.anthonynolan.org in order to sign up to the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register.

France's Hollande offers tax-cutting 'pact' to companies

PARIS (Reuters) – President Francois Hollande on Tuesday offered French companies what he called “a responsibility pact” to tackle unemployment under which they would reap the benefit of lower labour taxes in return for hiring more workers.

“It is based on a simple principle: lower labour charges and fewer restrictions on their activity in return for more hires and more dialogue with trade unions,” Hollande said in a New Year’s address broadcast on national television.

Hollande did not specify how he would go about reducing labour charges but it is a possibility that has been mooted under a wide-ranging reform of taxes already promised by his Socialist government for implementation during the remainder of his mandate through to 2017.

French corporate margins are among the lowest in Europe, partly due to the high labour charges needed to fund its generous welfare state.

Unemployment is stuck at around 11 percent, although Hollande – whose popularity ratings are at an all-time low for a president of France’s 55-year-old Fifth Republic – argues it has now hit a peak and is set on a downward curve.

“Of course the results are taking a while to appear, but they are there … I tell you again tonight: I have one priority, one goal, one commitment, and that is employment.”

Pollsters say Hollande’s government runs the risk of a massive protest vote against it in European Parliament elections due in May.

Hollande said he expected to come up with new proposals on Europe with Germany’s newly re-elected chancellor Angela Merkel early in the year, without elaborating.

M.I.A. Leaves Jay Z's Roc Nation

After a long,well-documented and at times uproarious battle with her label, M.I.A. announced on Tuesday (December 31) that she is leaving Jay Z’s Roc Nation.

“im leaving @RocNation . Thank to everyone who supported the M.I.A #MATANGI LP. HAPPY NEW YEAR | 2014,” she took to Twitter to announce on New Year’s Eve.

The “Bad Girls” singer started speaking out against Interscope in January of 2013 when the label, she said, kept pushing back her Matangi album because it was “too positive.” And when the album, originally slated for a late 2012 release, still wasn’t out in June of this year, she decided to release its lead single “Bring the Noize,” all on her own.

Her battle with Roc Nation began after Jay Z’s label started operating under Universal Music Group, which also owns Interscope, earlier this year. In July, the label pulled a teaser clip for a Matangi documentary for copyright infringement. At the time, M.I.A. said she had been “blacklisted” by her label and encouraged her fans to “put your middle fingers up.”

But after all that drama, her album was finally released on November 1. And in an interview with MTV News last month, it seemed the singer had fully embraced her “YALA” motto.

UK Stock Market 'May Hit Record Levels'

City forecasters have predicted the UK stock market may reach record levels in the new year.

After a steady – if not stellar – 2013, the FTSE 100 is set to outperform other indices over the next few years, according to a report by Capital Economics.

The FTSE, a measure of the UK’s top 100 shares, closed at 6,749 points on Tuesday.

The index gained 0.3%, bringing its annual advance to 14%, the biggest annual rally since 2009.

Yet measures of British consumer confidence suggest the financial markets do not reflect reality for many.

Pay is only rising at 0.9%, according to the Office for National Statistics .

And corporate profit warnings dampen the mood further.

Debenhams was one of the first to report on Christmas sales figures, and after a slow sale season, profits are already down £30m on last year.

It blamed the poor performance on the continuing decline of the high street, the impact of the recession on household incomes and the bad weather.

Retail analyst at ESCP Europe Jeremy Baker said: “More and more shops are chasing the same pound.

“There is a finite amount of shopping one person can do.”

Still, in his Autumn Statement announcement, Chancellor George Osborne said the UK economy will grow more rapidly in coming years.

The rate of inflation has started to slow, falling to 2.1% in the latest reading.

Unemployment fell to 7.4% this month, the lowest rate in nearly five years.

Top city economists say the stock market may soon be even better than back during the tech boom years, when it reached a high of 6,930 points in December 1999.

Stock analysts at Citigroup are especially optimistic, setting a target for the FTSE of 8,000 points by the end of 2014.

Revellers out to see in new year

Millions of people have again resisted home comforts in favour of pounding wind and rain-battered streets this evening, as revellers across the world celebrate the start of 2014.

The annual crackles of fireworks and chimes of Big Ben will ring in the new year in London, where people have been queuing for hours to get a prime spot on the Southbank, while street parties and shindigs throughout the UK will coax others from their homes.

In Scotland, about 80,000 people are expected in Edinburgh city centre for the famous Hogmanay street party, with music from the Pet Shop Boys as well as traditional Scottish sounds at an outdoor dance event.

But those venturing outside to welcome in 2014 will have to contend with some potentially brutal weather, with the Met Office issuing more than 100 flood alerts, covering every region of England.

Revellers across Scotland and Northern Ireland will have to wrap up against lows of between 3C (37.4F) and 5C (41F), while those in northern England will face temperatures of about 6C (42.8F) and those in the South will celebrate amid breezy temperatures of between 7C (44.6F) and 9C (48.2F).

Any late night party-goers making their way home from around 6am will find themselves among the unsettled weather that is predicted for the coming week.

It means those attending tomorrow’s annual New Year’s Day Parade in London may have to contend with a miserable start to the year.

The celebration parade will feature music from around the globe, leaving the Ritz Hotel at noon and winding through Piccadilly, Pall Mall and Trafalgar Square before ending in Parliament Square.

About half a million people are expected to attend.

Tonight in London, about 50,000 people will be given the chance to be part of “the world’s first multi-sensory fireworks display”, when peach snow, edible banana confetti and orange-scented bubbles descend on a section of the crowd.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “There is no better way to celebrate the highs of 2013 and the start of an exciting new year than by seeing one of the world’s most dazzling firework displays, now augmented in more ways than one.

“Watched by millions around the world, and hundreds of thousands of people from the banks of the Thames, it highlights our capital’s fantastic community spirit and its premier position on the global stage.”

Up to 100,000 people in key viewing areas by the Thames will also get packs featuring scratch ‘n’ sniff programmes, LED wristbands and seven kinds of fruit-flavoured sweets that link to the tastes and smells of the multi-sensory display.

Al Jazeera team face questioning in Egypt

Al Jazeera has expressed outrage at the continuing detention of its journalists in Egypt, and is increasingly concerned about the safety of the staff being held without charge.

While cameraman Mohamed Fawzy has been released, producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, along with correspondent Peter Greste, have been held since Sunday without charge, and no news on their release has been given by the authorities in Egypt.

Greste appeared in front of the prosecutor in Cairo for the second time in two days on Tuesday, but is still being detained.

A legal adviser said that Mohamed will be detained in Tora prison, outside Cairo, until he is brought before a prosecutor for questioning. This is due to happen on January 4.

Fahmy, also in Tora prison, will be questioned on Wednesday, as will Greste, who remains in custody at the police station.

‘False and unfounded’

Al Anstey, managing director of Al Jazeera English, said: “It is outrageous to be treating bone-fide journalists in this way. The allegations that are being made are totally false and unfounded.

“We operate in Egypt legally. The team were working on a number of stories to show our viewers around the world all aspects of the ongoing situation in the country, and every member of our team has huge experience carrying out the highest quality journalism with integrity.”

Doha-based Al Jazeera welcomed the release of Fawzy on Tuesday, but demanded that all the detained journalists be immediately set free.

Heather Allan, head of newsgathering at Al Jazeera English, said: “Peter and the team have been working on a number of stories in Egypt. We reported daily on political events including the recent protests in some universities.

“The team also covered the problems of traffic congestion in Cairo, and the cancellation of the Egyptian football league. We have been covering a variety of different stories from the country as we always do.”

Greste is an award-winning journalist who joined Al Jazeera English after working with CNN and BBC. He won the Peabody Award in 2012 for his documentary on Somalia.

Al Jazeera concerned

Fahmy is a producer who worked for CNN and the New York Times prior to joining Al Jazeera.

Mohamed is a journalist who works as a Cairo-based producer for Al Jazeera English.

All three Al Jazeera journalists have upheld the highest standards throughout their careers.

Al Jazeera is increasingly concerned about the safety of its journalists in Egypt.

Two other Al Jazeera journalists, Abdulla al-Shami and Mohamed Badr, have been held without charge for over five months. The network has been also demanding their immediate release.

Several organisations involved in global media freedom have joined the call for their immediate and unconditional release including: Committee for Protection of Journalists, Reporters Without Borders and International News Safety Institute.

Snapchat, Vine among top smartphone apps of 2013

By Natasha Baker

TORONTO (Reuters) – Snapchat, Vine, and Candy Crush Saga earned coveted spots on smartphones this year, making them among the most downloaded apps of the year.

There are more than a million apps on Apple Inc‘s App Store and Google Inc’s Play store, the two dominant marketplaces for apps, which see billions of downloads each year.

This year, the most downloaded apps were new takes on communication, gaming, and entertainment, according to mobile app experts.

“2013 was a really interesting year in terms of maturation, milestones and new trends,” said Craig Palli, chief strategy officer at Fiksu, a mobile marketing company based in Boston.

“The most downloaded apps were in familiar categories, but offered new twists,” he added.

While old favourites such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter — available for iPhone, Android and other devices – continued to be popular ways of communicating with friends, Snapchat eclipsed them in downloads in 2013, becoming the sixth most downloaded free app of the year on the App Store, according to Apple.

“Snapchat went from being a niche app to achieving much more critical mass, so much so that Facebook was reportedly willing to spend billions of dollars to acquire the company,” said Palli.

With Snapchat, users can send photos and videos that disappear shortly after they are viewed.

Launched in 2011, the app’s user base continued to grow rapidly in 2013, with over 13 million people using the app in October, according to the latest available estimates from global information and measurement company Nielsen. In December alone, over 400 million pieces of content were shared through the app, according to Snapchat, based in Venice, CA.

Vine, a video sharing app released earlier this year by microblogging company Twitter Inc, was the fourth most downloaded free app in 2013. The app, for iPhone, Android and other devices, allows users to share videos under six seconds in length. Nielsen estimates over 6 million people in the US were using the app in October of this year.

Snapchat and Vine fall into a category that mobile analytics firm Flurry calls camera-enhanced messaging, which they said grew eightfold in 2013.

“The communications category underwent phenomenal growth this year. Messaging apps like Snapchat, Line, Kakao (KakaoTalk) and WeChat are all exploding and becoming bigger than the carriers in their home countries in terms of users,” said Simon Khalaf, chief executive of San Francisco-based company Flurry.

CRUSHING SAGA

Games were another popular category, with Candy Crush Saga for iPhone, Android and Kindle Fire securing its position as the top downloaded free app, and as the top revenue grossing app. It has been downloaded over 500 million times since its launch last year, according to its creator King, based in the UK. Nielsen estimates that over 20 million people in the US were playing the game in October of this year.

In the entertainment category, Pandora continued to be the leading way to stream music and was the ninth most downloaded, and third top grossing, app in 2013.

“Clearly the device has swallowed radio,” said Palli. “Despite the new entrants, Pandora remains the dominant player in the space,” he added.

But the biggest trend of 2013, according to Palli, is the emergence of apps as a way to control companion devices, which he believes will continue to grow in 2014.

On Christmas Day, apps that pair with devices were among some of the top downloaded apps on the App Store.

The Fitbit app, for iPhone and Android, pairs with an electronic wristband to track metrics such as steps taken, distance travelled, and calories burned. It was the 16th most downloaded app on December 25, according to Palli, who monitored the Apple rankings.

Other apps that pair with devices, such as Chromecast, UP by Jawbone, and GoPro were also among the top downloads that day.

Khalaf predicts that apps for televisions will be the trend to watch for 2014.

“I think 2014 could be the year the TV industry gets disrupted by mobile,” said Khalaf.

“If you think about it, every American spends $100+ dollars per month on a service that is not personalized and not mobile. It’s an area that’s ripe for disruption and I think someone will come up with new content, maybe a new device and more importantly a better business model.”

Brain biomarker cue to the soundness of sleep

Swedish scientists on Tuesday said they had found further evidence that sleep helps to promote the health of brain cells.

The clues come in two so-called biomarkers — tell-tales of biological activity — found in the blood of sleep-deprived young men.

A team at Uppsala University recruited 15 healthy volunteers, and deprived them of sleep for a night or let them sleep for eight hours.

Among those who went without sleep, blood tests showed a roughly 20-percent increase in signature molecules called neuron-specific enolase, or NSE, and S-100 calcium-binding protein B, or S-100B.

“These brain molecules typically rise in blood under conditions of brain damage,” said neuroscientist Christian Benedict.

“A lack of sleep may promote neurodegenerative processes… (while) a good night’s sleep may be critical for maintaining brain health.”

The paper, published in the specialist journal Sleep, follows an investigation published in the US journal Science in October that found sleep accelerated the cleansing of cellular waste from the brain.

The detritus includes amyloid beta, a protein that, when accumulated is a driver of Alzheimer’s disease, according to the probe, which was conducted of mice.

Apple says never worked with NSA on iPhone backdoors

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Apple Inc has never worked with the U.S. National Security Agency and is unaware of efforts to target its smartphones, the company said in response to reports that the spy agency had developed a system to hack into and monitor iPhones.

Germany’s Der Spiegel reported this week that a secretive unit of the NSA, which is under fire for the extent and depth of its spying programs around the world, makes specialized gear and software to infiltrate and monitor a plethora of computing devices, including mobile phones.

The report included an NSA graphic dated 2008 that outlined a system in development called DROPOUTJEEP, described as a “software implant” that allows infiltrators to push and pull and retrieve data from iPhones such as contact lists. Der Spiegel referred to it as a “trojan,” or malware that helps hackers get into protected systems.

The report, which surfaced on Sunday, did not suggest that Apple had cooperated with the U.S. spying agency on so-called backdoors.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the NSA did not comment on any specific allegations but said that its interest “in any given technology is driven by the use of that technology by foreign intelligence targets.”

“The United States pursues its intelligence mission with care to ensure that innocent users of those same technologies are not affected,” the agency added.

The iPhone was a relatively innovative gadget in 2008. It hit the market in 2007 and proceeded to help revolutionize the mobile phone industry.

“Apple has never worked with the NSA to create a backdoor in any of our products, including iPhone. Additionally, we have been unaware of this alleged NSA program targeting our products,” the company said in a statement.

“We will continue to use our resources to stay ahead of malicious hackers and defend our customers from security attacks, regardless of who’s behind them.”

Zedd Has 'A Few Special Things' In Store For New Year's Show

By all accounts, Zedd has had a very good year. His 2013 included a world tour to support his first full-length album “Clarity,” a collaboration with Lady Gaga and Grammy nom for Best Dance Recording. Not to mention he landed on our Best Songs of 2013 list.

Zedd is capping it all off with a sold-out New Year’s Eve show at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom. And thisshow is a little different from what he’s done before.

“We have quite a few special things planned for the show,” Zedd told MTV News. “It’s the first time. It’s my own big New Year’s Eve show.”

Until this year the producer had either been a support act for someone else’s NYE gig or played a festival. “It’s a pretty big deal for me,” he admitted.

The EDM superstar said that fans can expect the same quality entertainment they got on every stop of his Moment of Clarity Tour … except more. “[It's] more than just a DJ set — it’s more of a show, where we plan every single song and the visuals and the lights and the special effects,” he said. “New Year’s will just be a little bit more of everything.”

So how does this year compare to last year’s celebration?

“We spent New Year’s Eve, so like 12 o’clock, in the van, and I had — I don’t know what you call them — those little pop confetti things, that was my party,” he said. “It was really great.”

Working on the last night of the year is fine with him, he told us. “I like doing it, I don’t have a problem with it. I try to get friends to come over when I play New Year’s, so I still get to see my friends when I play, and it’s always fun.”

HP had estimated that it would cut about 29,000 jobs through fiscal year 2014.

The company had about 317,500 employees as of October 31.

Shares of the company were little changed at $27.92 on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday. The stock has gained 96 percent so far this year.

Bloomberg era comes to a close in New York

Brash billionaire Michael Bloomberg on Tuesday concludes 12 years as New York’s mayor, an era marked by major changes in America’s biggest city but also criticism of the growing gap between rich and poor.

His Democratic successor Bill de Blasio, who defeated a Republican rival in a landslide in November, has pledged to narrow that divide.

Bloomberg gave his final weekly radio address on Sunday — number 601 — thanking New Yorkers for their support of “a relative unknown, an entrepreneur with no government experience who asked for your trust.”

He said he had done everything he could to improve life for the more than eight million people in the city he loves.

?Every day over the past 12 years, I?ve awakened thinking about how to make our city stronger and safer, healthier and greener, freer and fairer, more just and compassionate, more innovative and forward-looking, with more opportunity for all,” he said.

?On Wednesday morning, I will wake up and smile, knowing that we did everything we could to achieve those goals,” Bloomberg added.

In his final days in office, the 71-year-old mayor toured the city’s five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island) to have a look at the achievements he says he has chalked up since taking office January 1, 2002, replacing Rudy Giuliani.

As part of the departure ceremonies, a portrait of Bloomberg painted by Jon Friedman was hung outside the Blue Room at City Hall, alongside those of the other 107 people who have served as the Big Apple’s mayor.

Bloomberg, a Republican who became an independent and backs Democrats on many issues, loves statistics.

He says he fulfilled 89 percent of the 611 promises he made during the election campaigns he won in 2001, 2005 and 2009.

He also says he made New York the safest of the major US cities, with the lowest homicide rate in 50 years, dropping from 649 in 2001 to 332 in 2013, according to figures running up to December 27.

Tourism burgeoned to a record 54.3 million visitors in 2013, life expectancy has risen by two and a half years since 2002 and hundreds of acres of land have been recovered and turned into green areas for people to enjoy.

Bloomberg took office just months after the national trauma of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks that felled the twin towers of the World Trade Center and stayed busy right up to the end of his term.

On December 19, the city approved a bill to ban tobacco-free electronic cigarettes in public places like bars, restaurants, parks and beaches, in line with the Bloomberg-backed ban on cigarettes and other tobacco products in what became one of his most fervent personal crusades.

No stranger to criticism

While these measures made New York a trail-blazing city as far as public health is concerned, critics labeled Bloomberg a heavy-handed authoritarian. They cited for instance his attempt to ban jumbo size sugary soft drinks. The measure was taken to court and defeated.

He also drew fire for the police policy known as “stop and frisk”, criticized as discriminatory against Hispanics and blacks.

But more than anything, most New Yorkers lament that the gap between rich and poor has widened during Bloomberg’s years in office.

According to the Coalition for the Homeless, the number of people without a place to call home had risen as of June this year to a record 52,400, including 22,100 children.

The number of New Yorkers frequenting soup kitchens now total around 1.4 million. That is one out of every six people in this city of 8.33 million people, according to the New York City Coalition against Hunger.

Bloomberg rejects all of the criticism.

He insists he has made New York a city of more opportunity. He notes the nearly four million jobs the city boasted as of the end of this year, which marks a record and an increase of 13 percent compared to 2001.

Love him or hate him, what cannot be denied is that his face has become synonymous with New York at every level and in the collective subconscious.

The local band called LCD Soundsystem said “your mild billionaire mayor’s now convinced he’s a king.” This was part of a song called “New York I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down”.

The workaholic Bloomberg has said he will attend the swearing-in Wednesday of de Blasio, to be led by former president Bill Clinton.

A day later, Bloomberg will go to Hawaii and then New Zealand. That’s a first for a guy who says he has not taken a single day of vacation since he took over the job.

He says he will later focus a bit on Bloomberg, the financial news service he founded in the 1980s, some philanthropy and an organization that brings together 63 cities working to save the environment, as well as initiatives that favor immigration reform and stricter controls on guns.

Huawei Ascend Mate 2 leaks in new photos

The good ship Huawei is a leaky vessel. We’ve already seen photos of its new phablet, the Ascend Mate 2, and now even more snaps have surfaced.

These pictures of the Huawei Ascend Mate 2, which is expected to appear at CES next week, leaked on Engadget. And the photos reveal specs that are frankly a little disappointing.

READ: Huawei Ascend Mate 2 with 6.1-inch screen leaked

Rather than upgrading the 6.1-inch screen of the original Ascend Mate, Huawei is sticking to the same 720 x 1280 resolution which, on a screen that size, is lacking when placed next to its phablet competition. But perhaps it will be cheap, appealing to an end of the market which isn’t well catered for when it comes to phablets.

The Ascend Mate 2 should come with a quad-core 1.6GHz Huawei Kirin 910 processor, 2GB of RAM plus 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras. It will also arrive with Android 4.2.2 running the show.

Since the spec jump from the last model isn’t huge we’d hope that this handset is cheaper than the last, which came in at £335. We should be able to let you know more next week when the official announcement is expected.

John Mayer Steals Katy Perry's Phone: Cuteness Ensues

With her mystical and witchy vibes, Stevie Nicks has always been one of Katy Perry‘s idols. She once told ABC that she “sees straight through my soul.” So when the Fleetwood Mac leading lady dedicated a song to Perry at last night’s concert in Las Vegas, well, she was speechless.

That’s when boyfriend John Mayer took over.

“John here,” he wrote on KP’s Twitter handle. “Katy can’t write because she’s getting over Stevie Nicks dedicating Landslide to us at the Fleetwood Mac concert. Unforgettable.”

And just because they’re Katy Perry and John Mayer and they might just be the cutest celeb couple at the moment (Kimye, step aside), he continued, giving us a little snippet of what it’s like being “unconditionally” in love at a Fleetwood Mac concert.

“While I’m at it I have a couple things I’d like to get off my-oh, she’s motioning for the phone back. Gotta go!! -JM”

Sounds like John should start tweeting more often. His account seems to be run by his team, but hey, “say what you need to say,” John.

To close out 2013, the couple is still in promo mode for their “Who You Love” video from the song off Paradise Valley. The two took the stage together for Mayer’s tour closer in Brooklyn to sing the duet and have been making the press rounds on “Ellen” and “Good Morning America.”

And if things keep going well for the two, who knows, maybe Stevie will be around to officiate their wedding, just like she did for Vanessa Carlton on Friday.

'The Walking Dead' Hit-List: Who Dies Next?

Warning: Spoilers from the “Walking Dead” midseason finale, and the “Walking Dead” comic books, are ahead. Turn back now if you’re not all caught up. Go on, get!

Are you done grieving Hershel? The Governor’s gone, too, and perhaps even baby Judith as well — best to move on quick, because based on a new “Walking Dead” rumor, it sounds like another main character is about to join the body pile.

A post on ComicBook.com states that another main cast member will die in the second half of “The Walking Dead” season four — a character “who has not been killed in the comic book series.” That bit of information narrows down the list of possible victims considerably.

It’s just an unverified rumor for now, but hey, it’s a holiday, and it’s slow out there. Let’s have some fun with the rumor: judging by the clues, who is next to die on “The Walking Dead”?

(And seriously, this is your final spoiler warning if you’re not up to speed on the most recent “Walking Dead” comics. No turning back now!)

On the show, there are only four characters who appear in and are still alive in the comics: Rick, Carl, Michonne and Maggie. All the rest are either dead and gone in the comics, or haven’t been introduced quite yet on the show and don’t exactly qualify as “a main cast member.” (There’s one outlier candidate; we’ll get there in a minute.) With that logic, it can really only be one of those four.

I don’t see Michonne leaving. She’s the sword-wielding, zombie-cleaving, wild west ninja-warrior of the zombie apocalypse. There’s value in keeping Michonne around for a good while yet. And I don’t believe it’s Maggie; I think she and Glenn still have a little further to go, and actress Lauren Cohan is the closest thing the show has to a female lead right now, following last year’s deaths of Lori and Andrea, not to mention this past season’s exile of Carol.

How about Carl? Let’s assume baby Judith is dead. If that’s the case, Rick has lost his wife and infant daughter. If he loses Carl in the second half of season four, Rick will completely lose it, for the third time. That’s not a satisfying outcome. But maybe Chandler Riggs wants off the show for whatever reason, or the writers really want to bring Rick all the way to rock-bottom. Killing Carl finishes that job.

But let’s imagine the unimaginable — let’s imagine that Rick Grimes dies by the end of season four. He’s the day-one lead of the show, but should he remain in that seat forever? Rick’s been through quite the wringer already; how much further does he have to go? What’s more, killing Rick by the end of season four would be a dark reflection of the Governor’s death right at the midseason finale. Both leaders enter the season, neither of them leave. There’s some poetry there.

It would be stunning and bold if Rick died on “Walking Dead,” and someone else, like Daryl, took over as lead — which brings us to the outlier: Daryl Dixon.

Daryl hasn’t died yet in the comics, because he doesn’t exist in the comics. Norman Reedus’ character was created specifically for the show. Judging by the wording of the clue, it’s completely possible that Daryl could meet his end — another move that would rock fans to the core, perhaps even more so than killing Rick.

There’s no telling if the latest “Walking Dead” death rumor is true, but it doesn’t really matter, does it? It’s “The Walking Dead.” Sooner or later, everybody dies.

Turkish minister says fending off 'mini-coup attempt'

By Daren Butler

ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turkey’s government said on Tuesday it was fending off a “mini coup attempt” by elements in the police and judiciary who served the interests of foreign and domestic forces bent on humbling the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said the ruling AK Party had in the past survived military coup plots and attempts in the courts to outlaw it. It would not now yield to a corruption investigation he said targeted the government but was already damaging the national economy.

“These latest formations in the judiciary and the police, we can’t call it a coup, but a mini coup attempt. This is what interests foreign investors,” he told broadcaster CNBC-e, echoing suggestions by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of a foreign interest in the crisis.

“Maybe the clearest indicator of this was the fall in share prices,” added Babacan, who is in charge of the economy. The market value of Turkish listed companies had fallen $49 billion by Monday’s market close, he said. The main share index was down 1 percent on Tuesday.

Erdogan has, without naming it, accused a movement led by Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen of creating a “state within a state”, using influence in the police and judiciary in a campaign to discredit the government.

The “Hizmet” (Service) movement controls a vast global network of schools and businesses. Tensions have grown between the two former allies over elements of foreign and domestic policy and moves to close his private schools in Turkey.

The graft inquiry became public on December 17 with a series of raids and detentions of senior businessmen close to Erdogan and of the sons of three ministers. Since then, the media hostile to Erdogan has brimmed with tales of police raiding offices or homes and seizing caches of dollar bills.

Erdogan’s supporters argue that accusations have so far lacked any substance and were driven by political ambitions.

“We as the government are on the job,” Babacan said. “We created this political and economic stability with our own strength. We will not easily allow someone to come and take it away. However many efforts there were until now trying to shake political stability, we overcame them all.”

ARMY OUT OF POLITICS

Erdogan has overseen strong economic growth and a period of political stability unmatched in modern times since his AK Party was first elected in 2002.

The current corruption crisis is not the first critical moment for Erdogan, who created the party with the name AK – a word that in Turkish suggests purity and resistance to the corruption that had tainted older established parties.

Hundreds of senior army officers have been jailed on accusations of plotting to overthrow Erdogan, who has succeeded in banishing from politics a military that had intervened to topple four governments in the second half of the 20th century.

Hardliners in the judiciary tried in 2008 to impose a ban on the AK Party, a coalition of conservative religious elements, centre-right figures and nationalists that was accused of endangering the country’s secular order.

As Babacan was speaking, news emerged of a further resignation from the AK Party. A total of seven MPs have resigned from the AKP since the end of November, five since the December 17 police raids.

There is, however, no sign of any large-scale abandonment of the party which dominates Turkish politics. Erdogan, playing on his still unrivalled popularity, could even call early elections next year to shore up his position.

Erdogan has responded to the corruption scandal with the purging of some 70 police investigators and blocked a second wave of investigations. Those targeted some of Erdogan’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, including a third Bosphorus bridge and a canal allowing passage from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, easing traffic on the Istanbul Strait.

Erdogan, whose popularity held up through a summer of protests against what critics call an increasingly authoritarian style of government, has broadened Turkish influence in the Middle East and Africa with a vigorous business drive, led often by construction projects.

Certainly, this has been to some extent to the detriment of relations with the United States and European Union.

“There is a very significant and broad mass uncomfortable with the position which Turkey has reached in the last 11 years, the advances it has secured, the power it has created in the region, its resonance in the world,” Babacan said.

Woman badly hurt by Highland stag

A woman has been seriously injured in a “one-in-a-million” attack by a stag.

Kate Stone, from Cambridge, was gored by the animal near Fort William in the Highlands and had to be airlifted to hospital in Glasgow.

She is understood to be in intensive care at Southern General Hospital, with injuries to her neck and spine caused by the stag’s antlers.

The attack happened in the early hours of Monday December 30 when Ms Stone and a group of friends were standing outside a private residence in Lochailort.

The group were on a short break in the Highlands and had been at a ceilidh in Lochailort Inn. They were staying at the nearby Mo-Dhachaidh B&B owned by Gary Burton.

Mr Burton said he heard about the attack when one of Ms Stone’s friends returned at around 2.30am.

“I think what happened was that the stag panicked. It was trapped in a fenced garden having got through a gate. I don’t think there was anywhere else to go and it charged out of the gate,” he said.

“It’s very bizarre and very horrific.”

The group were left shocked by the attack but managed to help Ms Stone and contact the emergency services, Mr Burton said.

“The last I heard was late last night that Kate is still in intensive care,” he said.

The local community has never experienced attacks of this nature before, he said.

“This is a one-in-a-million event which has shocked the whole community.

“We are at one with nature in Lochailort, and we have deer all around us.

“We are all hoping and praying that Kate pulls through.

“I don’t pry into our guests personal lives but I had a conversation with Kate and I know she is a very outdoors person, and loves camping and walking. It would be a tragedy if she couldn’t do that any more.”

What Are Spider-Man's New Year's Eve Plans?

Spider-Man’s up to something.

The friendly neighborhood wall-crawler and star of next summer’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ will help ring in 2014 tonight at tonight’s Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration. Marc Webb and Spidey himself went on Good Morning America this week to promote the appearance, and they announced that a new “Spider-Man” clip will be revealed live in Times Square sometime before the ball-drop.

But that can’t be it, can it? Spider-Man isn’t just hanging out over Times Square for no reason other than supporting a clip reveal, is there? We think not. Here are some other predictions for what might happen during Spidey’s New Year’s Eve appearance tonight.

1. Andrew Garfield Will Be There As Spider-Man

The man behind the mask loves Spidey. He loves playing him, and he loves celebrating his culture. Garfield’s been known to make public appearances as the web-slinger in the past, but this would really take things to another level. It’s probably too much to expect Garfield will be on hand for a live Spider-Man performance, but it would be cool as hell and worth sticking around for.

2. They’re Going To Announce Spinoff Casting News

Sony recently revealed plans to make two movies starring “Spider-Man” villains, “Venom” and “Sinister Six.” There’s no word on who will star in either film, so no better time than a live television broadcast to make some big announcements. Then again, that’s a pretty nerdy, deep-cut use of air-time. The focus will likely be on “ASM2,” as it should be.

3. It’s A Secret Tribute To “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark”

After all, the Broadway musical closes its doors shortly, so what better time than now to give it a very public sendoff? But I hope that’s not it. Every viewer would have their hearts in their throats, waiting for an all-new “Turn off the Dark” disaster to happen live on national television.

4. It’s Really Just A Clip

And if it is, then it better be one hell of a clip, or else that was a whole lot of hype for nothing. We don’t need to know anymore about the movie than we already do — frankly, after the trailer revealed Dane DeHaan’s Goblin mode, I think we already know too much. What we do need is a better look at the film’s action, and some sense of how Jamie Foxx’s Electro works in motion.

Webb and the web-head must deliver a kick-ass, high-octane clip that shows off why everyone needs to get amped up for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” That’s the only way we’ll care more about the web-fluid in Spidey’s cartridges than the champagne-fluid in our glasses tonight.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ swings into theaters on May 2, 2014.

South Sudan rebels take part of key town, sanctions loom

By Carl Odera and Aaron Maasho

JUBA (Reuters) – South Sudanese rebels seized control of parts of the strategically key town of Bor on Tuesday as a deadline set by neighbouring countries for an end to hostilities and peace talks neared.

Unrest in the world’s youngest country has killed more than a thousand people in the past two weeks and displaced close to 200,000, raising the spectre of civil war and unnerving oil markets.

The African Union threatened sanctions late on Monday against those inciting the violence and hampering international efforts to negotiate an end to the fighting, which risks drawing in other countries in eastern Africa.

“The town is still partly in our hands and partly in the hands of the rebels,” Mayor Nhial Majak Nhial told Reuters by phone from the government’s military headquarters inside Bor, 190 km (120 miles) to the north of the capital, Juba, by road.

He said the national Sudan People’s Liberation Army was outnumbered by militia fighters the government says belong to the feared “White Army”, which has in the past sided with rebel leader Riek Machar.

Information Minister Michael Makuei added: “This morning (the rebels) advanced to the centre. The fighting is still taking place.”

South Sudan’s neighbours have given the warring sides until Tuesday to lay down their arms and begin talks – but there has been no sign of the hostilities ending. The precise moment the deadline expires is not clear.

The clashes erupted on December 15 with fighting among a group of soldiers in Juba. The violence quickly spread to half of the country’s ten states, cleaving the nation along the ethnic faultline of Machar’s Nuer group and President Salva Kiir’s Dinka.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said on Monday east African nations had agreed to move in and defeat former Vice President Machar if he rejected a government ceasefire offer. There was no immediate confirmation of the pact from other nations.

But Museveni’s words demonstrated the scale of regional worry over the fighting which has reached some of South Sudan’s oil fields, forcing a cut in output.

“CATASTROPHIC”

The scene of an ethnic massacre of Dinka in 1991 by Nuer fighters loyal to Machar, Bor was briefly seized by the rebels early in the conflict before being retaken by government troops after several days of heavy fighting.

A spokesman for the government of South Sudan’s Unity state, controlled by forces loyal to Machar, previously denied Machar was in control of the White Army fighters, raising the prospect that the violence was spreading beyond the control of widely recognised ethnic leaders.

About 70,000 civilians have fled Bor and sought refuge in the town of Awerial in neighbouring Lakes state, with no access to food, clean water or shelter, medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said. Others were hiding in swamps.

“Living conditions are verging on the catastrophic,” MSF said.

Fighting across the country has displaced at least 180,000 people, including 75,000 seeking refuge inside different U.N. bases, according to U.N. figures.

At a meeting on Monday in Gambia in West Africa, the AU said it was dismayed and disappointed by the bloodletting that comes two years after South Sudan won independence from its northern neighbour, Sudan.

“(Council) expresses its intention to take appropriate measures, including targeted sanctions, against all those who incite violence, including along ethnic lines, continue hostilities (and) undermine the envisaged inclusive dialogue,” the AU’s Peace and Security Council said.

Schumacher slightly better but fragile - doctors

By Lucien Libert

GRENOBLE, France (Reuters) – French doctors treating Michael Schumacher for brain injuries sustained in a ski fall said the seven-times Formula One world champion was in slightly better condition on Tuesday after an overnight operation, but that he remained fragile.

The 44-year-old German is battling for his life after slamming his head against a rock while skiing off-piste in the French resort of Meribel on Sunday, an accident which triggered an outpouring of concern among fans around the world.

Doctors treating him at a hospital in the eastern city of Grenoble said his condition had stabilised enough by late Monday to carry out a new operation to treat the effects of internal bleeding within Schumacher’s skull.

“The situation is more under control than yesterday but we cannot say he is out of danger,” Jean-Francois Payen, head anaesthetician, told a news conference at the CHU hospital in the eastern French city of Grenoble.

“We have won some time but we must continue an hour-by-hour surveillance… It is premature to speculate on his condition,” he said, adding that Schumacher was still in a critical state and suffering from severe lesions and contusions.

Emmanuel Gay, head of the hospital’s neurosurgery service, said the operation carried out around 10.00 pm (2100 GMT) on Monday had successfully removed a large hematoma – the medical term for a build-up of blood – from his brain.

“It was larger and more accessible (than others) … We judged we could remove it without taking any risks,” Gay said.

He said the operation was designed to reduce, within Schumacher’s skull, the pressure on the brain.

Doctors said the fact that the retired motor racing champion was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident had at least enabled him to make it to the hospital alive.

Payen said the medical team in Grenoble had discussed the operation with Schumacher’s family. He added that the condition of the motor racing great was still too fragile to consider transferring him to another hospital for the time being.

NEXT DAYS CRUCIAL

Schumacher is under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spinal injury expert who is also president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) Institute.

Saillant said it was still impossible to say how Schumacher’s condition would progress in coming days.

“We are a little less worried than yesterday but I’m sure you understand that the situation could change this evening or tomorrow,” he told the news conference.

Schumacher, who lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children, is the most successful Formula One driver of all times with a record 91 race victories in a career spanning more than two decades.

Schumacher left the sport last year after a less successful three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006.

French authorities have opened an investigation into the accident, which took place as Schumacher was out skiing with his teenage son.

Ferrari always used to have an annual January gathering with their drivers in the Dolomites and Schumacher, a fitness fanatic, impressed with his skiing ability.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been deeply shocked to learn of his accident, her spokesman said on Monday as expressions of concern poured in from fans, former team-mates and rivals.

Former British Formula One driver David Coulthard said he believed Schumacher had not won the full recognition he merited for taking his sport to new heights.

“I only hope Michael Schumacher pulls through so that he can see all the nice things people are saying about him,” he wrote in the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

A murder inquiry has been launched after a woman was found dead at a house in a seaside village.

The 55-year-old woman was discovered with a serious head injury in the property at Smuggler’s Lane, Bosham, near Chichester, West Sussex, at 9.50am on Monday.

A Sussex Police spokesman said that a post-mortem examination had not yet been carried out, but the death was being treated as suspicious and is being investigated by detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team.

The spokesman added that the victim had not yet been formally identified.

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Fanner said: “At this stage we are keeping an open mind as to the motive, but we are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area from late afternoon on Sunday December 29 to around 9am on Monday December 30.

“Please call us if you know anything, no matter how insignificant you might think it is. It could be important to the investigation.

“This is a rare incident for Bosham, which is a safe area. We have increased our neighbourhood policing patrols in the village and if anyone has any information or concerns, I would urge them to speak to one of the officers who are there.”

Deutsche Telekom's new CEO faces twin tests

By Harro Ten Wolde and Leila Abboud

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – When Deutsche Telekom’s new Chief Executive Tim Hoettges takes office on Wednesday, a revival of mergers and acquisitions in the sector and a dramatically changing competitive landscape in Germany will pose his biggest challenges.

Having negotiated key deals in the United States and Britain during his four-year tenure as finance chief and having previously turned around the German fixed-line business while under fire from cable rivals, the 51-year-old is no stranger to the territory.

Hoettges will draw on such experience to decide how Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s third-largest telco by sales, should navigate consolidation on both sides of the Atlantic and take on a rejuvenated Vodafone in Germany.

Born in Solingen, a city in the prosperous eastern state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hoettges is said to be straightforward, traditional and intense, unlike his long-time friend and outgoing CEO Rene Obermann, who is known for his easy charm.

“Hoettges is not known for schmoozing corporate colleagues or politicians,” said another banker who worked for him.

“He handles such relations in a cool and businesslike way. He is not the kind of person who is buddies with politicians and the rich and beautiful of the world.”

Hoettges treads a more adversarial path.

“Unlike some CEOs, he wants to be contradicted,” said another banker who has worked with him. “He wants an intense discussion and will challenge you, too. He’s also like that in negotiations: clear goals, minimal compromises.”

While he immerses himself in the details, he never forgets the broad strategic lines, the banker added.

The piano-playing running enthusiast also has a less severe side than his angular physique and bald pate might suggest, say those who know him. Some recall the riverboat party to celebrate his 50th birthday, when Hoettges donned a wig and moustache to give guests a glimpse of what he looked like in his youth.

He and Obermann became close friends over the past decade as they climbed the ranks of Deutsche Telekom together, even becoming neighbours after building houses on adjacent plots.

DIFFERENT HAND

Bankers and analysts do not expect Hoettges to suddenly alter the strategy set by Obermann in recent years, which consisted of cleaning up overseas businesses including the money-losing T-Mobile US, while defending its leadership in Germany by investing heavily in the network.

Nevertheless, as telecoms acquisitions gather pace, Hoettges could soon be playing a very different hand to his predecessors’.

In Europe, U.S. telco AT&T has been scouting for acquisitions, and if it bids for Vodafone as some analysts and bankers say it could, Deutsche Telekom and other European groups would be forced to react against a formidable new player.

In the United States, third-placed mobile operator Sprint, which is backed by Japan’s Softbank, has been studying a bid for Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile US to bulk up.

That T-Mobile US is even of interest to Sprint and has been poaching customers from larger rivals in recent quarters can in part be credited to Hoettges, who was instrumental in negotiating deals and a turnaround for the unit.

It all began when AT&T’s $39 billion bid for T-Mobile in 2011 fell apart because of regulatory opposition. Fortunately, Hoettges and others had insisted on a big break-up fee if the deal with AT&T fell through, which included cash and mobile spectrum worth $6 billion.

The package, especially the spectrum, turned out to be particularly useful to T-Mobile, enabling its launch of superfast mobile broadband services known as 4G. “Tim knew the technology that the team was negotiating for,” said a banker.

The banker said T-Mobile was now well positioned in the United States in the event of further consolidation.

“Hoettges created a cookie jar in the U.S. which will provide cash in case of a disposal or a bargaining chip, however the consolidation trend goes,” the banker said.

HARDBALL

Gervais Pellissier, chief financial officer at Orange, dealt head to head with Hoettges in negotiations to merge their British mobile businesses in 2010.

“He is tough in negotiations but always tries to understand where the other person is coming from,” said Pellissier.

During a testy meeting over whether to kill the Orange and T-Mobile brands in Britain, Hoettges sensed that the two sides were at an impasse and suggested everyone take a break for a beer. “I think he knew everything was about to descend into a fight, so he cut it off. He called me a few hours later and we were able to make progress,” said Pellissier.

The future of that venture, now called EE, will be among the strategic decisions Hottges has to take. The owners have said they will consider floating a minority stake in the operator, Britain’s largest, valued at about 10 billion euros, though they have pushed back the final decision as EE won 4G customers in recent quarters.

Hoettges will also have to keep a close eye on the German market, which generates about half of group operating profit.

Vodafone, which disputes the top mobile spot with Deutsche Telekom, has bought Kabel Deutschland to boost its broadband offering, while third and fourth-placed mobile groups Telefonica Deutschland and KPN’s E-Plus are seeking to merge. Both deals could force operators to adopt new commercial strategies to win customers, and mobile prices have already come down in recent quarters.

Hoettges has shown he can play hard ball. As head of the German fixed business in 2007 he held out during a month-long strike over a plan to outsource some workers.

Backing down is not something he takes lightly.

One union official said Hoettges reluctantly agreed a deal to raise German wages in 2009 but was never entirely reconciled to the defeat.

“It still irritates him even today. He is very persistent.”
