Two men have been charged after former Manchester United player Andrew Cole was racially abused on a flight from Dublin to Manchester.
Lee Patrick Byrne, 28, from Dublin, is accused of racially-aggravated public order offence. Gregory Horan, 26, has been charged with being drunk on an aircraft.
Both men were arrested when the Aer Lingus flight landed at Manchester Airport on Sunday.
They appeared before Trafford Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where they were remanded on bail.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed its officers were called to the airport in relation to the alleged offences on the flight.
“Officers were responding to reports that a 42-year-old man was being subjected to racial abuse while on the plane, and that two passengers were drunk and would not co-operate with cabin staff,” a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said.
The footballer – who spent six years playing for Manchester United – suffered racial taunts throughout his career, both on and off the pitch.
The former England international is involved with the Kick It Out campaign alongside several other black footballers.
The campaign aims to end racial abuse in the game.
