New York City punks Cerebral Ballzy evoke a moody Jim Jarmusch feel in the video for their new track, “City’s Girl.”
In the clip, directed by frontman Honor Titus, the musicians strike disaffected poses throughout the city. Titus frames the video like a DIY punk film project, using grainy, black-and-white images throughout. “The city’s got a hold of her now,” he sings over a noisy, distorted clatter. It’s a fitting companion for the video itself, which features a blonde girl strolling through the busy streets, buying ice cream and dancing against the wind on a random rooftop. There’s also a cameo from Strokes frontman (and Cerebral Ballzy friend) Julian Casablancas.

“This video was made to serve as a time capsule capturing the fleeting beauty and twisted innocence of living in the city,” Titus says. “Heavily inspired by some of my no wave and French New Wave cinema favorites, it was shot very run-and-gun, and also very fun. Jim Jarmusch would be pretty proud. I’d say Lydia Lunch would have a crush on us. This effort makes obvious that downtown New York City still has a bit of edge. That lackadaisical cool that has become customary is still engrained in at least Ballzy’s motives. Julian Casablancas gets it.”
The band’s upcoming second LP, Jaded and Faded, doesn’t have a firm release date but is expected next year. Keep up with the band at their official website.
