Hollyoaks actress Nikki Sanderson has revealed she has been left bruised after filming violent scenes for her character’s domestic abuse storylines, because she wants it to look as real as possible.
The soap star plays Maxine Minniver, who has become trapped in a controlling relationship with teacher Patrick Blake, who has now turned violent.
Nikki told Digital Spy how important the bond of trust is between her and Jeremy Sheffield, who plays Patrick, when filming the fight scenes.
She revealed: “They are [complex], because again we’re trying to make the storyline as real as possible. Sometimes you might get a little bump or bruise here or there, but fortunately myself and Jeremy get along really well in real life, so we really trust each other.
“Sometimes I’ll tell Jeremy to grab me harder or push things further, because we want it to look real. We’re really invested in this storyline and it’s worth it because the scenes look so much better.”
Patrick has flipped after learning Maxine had a one-night stand with his son Dodger Savage (Danny Mac).
Nikki revealed: “I think Maxine and Dodger make the perfect couple, and that’s what is so sad about this situation. Maxine knows that Dodger is the right person for her, and Dodger wants to be with Maxine. But Maxine is already at the point where she’d do anything to be with Patrick, because she’s been so heavily manipulated by him.
“It’s like a ‘head or heart?’ situation. Her head is telling her that she should be with Patrick, but her heart is telling her that she belongs with Dodger.”
