Formula One star Lewis Hamilton has said he is “deeply saddened” by the death of two McLaren workers in a sports car crash near the team’s headquarters.
The 2008 world champion, who drove for the team for six years, tweeted his condolences to their families, saying his “thoughts and prayers” were with them.
The men, named locally as 19-year-old Darren Hayes and Ollie Bourton, 22, died when the Subaru Impreza they were travelling in collided with a Ford Transit van on the A320 in Ottershaw near Woking, Surrey.
They were based at the nearby McLaren Production Centre, next to where the company’s F1 cars are built, and worked for the firm’s sports car division.
Bouquets of flowers were left outside the racing team’s factory, as staff paid tribute to colleagues described by the company as “hard working and extremely well-liked”.
Hamilton, who drives for the Mercedes team, was one of several members of the F1 community who spoke about the crash as teams continued their preparations for the new season at a test in Jerez, Spain.
McLaren driver Kevin Magnussen said he was “so, so sorry” to hear the news, while Britain’s Gary Paffett, who is one of the team’s test drivers, tweeted: “Very sad news … they will be missed.”
Two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Alex Wurz, who once raced for McLaren, added: “My condolences to the families and friends.”
The crash, which happened between the McLaren and Otter roundabouts, closed the Guildford Road for several hours.
Surrey Police appealed for witnesses to the crash to contact them on 101.
