Rihanna and Shakira may be singing from under a man’s spell on “Can’t Remember to Forget You,” in the brand-new video, they’re somewhere near paradise, and doing just fine on their own.
In fact, there isn’t a Y chromosome to be found in the whole three-and-a-half-minute clip — and judging from their embraces, they’re totally OK with that.
Like the track itself reflects their Caribbean roots — Rih hails from Barbados; Shakira is Colombian — the clip for “Can’t Remember to Forget You” seems like it came straight out of the some suave resort in Antigua. The two smoke Cubans in a cabana for two, spend an unusual amount of time dancing on walls and, at one point, hold each other with next to no clothing.
The track finds the ladies in a battle of will power, fighting a shared addiction to a man they can’t shake off. In a reggae-tinged voice nothing whatsoever like “Stay,” Rihanna sings “I go back again/ Fall of the train / Land in his bed / Repeat yesterday’s mistakes.”
“The song is about that guy that just gets under your skin and you can’t leave alone,” Shakira told Ryan Seacrest earlier this month. “I think every woman has been through that.”
And she admitted she “honestly thought it would never happen,” in an interview with Glamour, the “She Wolf” singer said working with Rihanna was “utopia.”
“She’s the sexiest woman on the planet,” she said. “And at the end of the day, we’re both just basically Caribbean girls. The chemistry was so good and so real.”
