Chris Martin has said that music helped him during the break-up of his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow.
The Coldplay frontman, 37, said that he used music to channel “a bad feeling into a good feeling”.
He told Steve Wright’s show on Radio 2: “You can choose your paths in life, I find, when you get to a point where you’re like ‘I could either jump off a bridge or I could try and turn this around.’
“I’m sure lots of people have that in much harder instances. You just find the right tools.”
He added: “I feel so grateful. Music, especially over the last couple of years, has been very alchemising.”
“(If) you’re going through something difficult in your life, music for me is always a friend and something that helps you to figure things out, that’s what I’m doing in the middle of the night.”
When asked how he got through personal problems, Chris said that writing new album Ghost Stories was a big help.
“It’s so important for me that album. It hasn’t really crossed my mind what it means for anyone else … because I needed it.
“It was how do you turn a bad feeling into a good feeling?”
The father-of-two said of his attitude towards life: “I’m very grateful to be here. Every day is a blessing. That’s how I feel.”
Chris also revealed he was no longer a vegetarian, but added: “I’d only eat something that I think I could kill. I’d kill a fish. Not a giraffe.”
Chris also spoke about the band’s work with charities, saying: “When I got pocket money as a kid, my mum said you should give 10 per cent of it away, and so we just keep that rule… I think it would be amazing if all companies did that.”
