Monty Python fans have described the members’ first comeback gig as one of the “best things they have ever seen”.
The cult comedy act – John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones – performed together for the first time in decades at London’s O2 Arena.
The show, which featured an extended cast of dancers, a full orchestra and special effects, ended with a singalong version of Always Look On The Bright Side of Life.
Among the classic sketches was the Four Yorkshiremen, comparing their tough upbringing, and the Lumberjack Song.
Fans and critics alike agreed that the crew have still got it.
Mark Jeffries from the Daily Mirror said: “It’s not something completely different but that’s exactly why fans will love it.”
Fans leaving the O2 on Tuesday night said the tickets were worth every penny.
One man told Sky News: “They stormed it!” and another said it was the “best thing he had ever seen”.
Actor and presenter Stephen Fry shared his joy on Twitter after his stint on stage.
He wrote: “Oh my days. Just seen @montypython @TheO2 – in fact I made a little surprise appearance. Felt like being on stage with the Beatles *sigh* !”
There were also guest appearances by Stephen Hawking and Professor Brian Cox.
The Guardian was less enthusiastic, concluding that the show “isn’t bad”.
“This live show won’t make any converts. But it sends the faithful away happy,” said Peter Bradshaw.
The final show of the 10-night run on July 20 will be broadcast live to cinemas around the world and TV rights have been sold for more than 100 countries, from Afghanistan to Yemen.
“It means we’re actually going to say goodbye publicly on one show. Nobody ever has the chance to do that – the Beatles didn’t get a last good night,” said Idle.
Cleese, the oldest of the five at 74, insists it will really be the last show.
“It’s much better to do it once really well, in England where it started, and then just leave it at that,” he said.
