David Mitchell has speculated that the next series of Peep Show could be its last as the characters are getting too old to live together.
The comedian, who plays Mark alongside Robert Webb as Jeremy, said there was “certainly a possibility” that the upcoming ninth series could see the show draw to an end.
He told Digital Spy: “They’re getting older, you know, and they’re a bit old to be sharing a flat together. It’s always been heightened reality, but it’s always been a credible reality on Peep Show and I think if it got to a stage where people were saying, ‘I don’t understand why these people are cohabiting’, then it would’ve jumped the shark.
“So I think we’ve got to contemplate the possibility of it winding down. But who knows, 20 years later, they might come back together in old age.”
He also said that there could be a while to wait yet before the ninth series airs.
“There’s another one commissioned but Sam [Bain] and Jesse [Armstrong] – the writers – are really busy at the moment, so I don’t think they’ll have a chance to write it until next year,” he said.
“I can’t imagine us shooting it any time before the second half of next year. [It could air in] maybe late 2014, maybe early 2015, that’s my sort of guess at the moment.
“Hopefully, because the show’s been running long enough, it’s had enough momentum that people won’t mind a bit of a gap. It’ll create appetite for a new series.”
Channel 4′s head of comedy Phil Clarke recently told Chortle that he was in discussions with the show’s creators about how it might end.
“We’re talking about Peep Show, how that’s going to be rounded off,” he said. “The discussion is about how it’s going to conclude.”
