Murphy: Kids shocked at shaved head

Cillian Murphy has revealed that his children were “horrified” when he shaved his hair off for his role in Peaky Blinders.

The 37-year-old admitted his two sons couldn’t quite believe it when he took the brave move for his portrayal of gang leader Tommy Shelby in the BBC Two series.

“When it’s done, you look like you’re going to rob a post office. My kids were horrified!” he admitted.

Cillian revealed that the show’s director Steven Knight would discuss the haircut over their morning meal.

“The director and I would often have a breakfast haircut chat – ‘Can we have another inch off?’ We worked it out over the muesli,” he joked.

The Irish star said playing Tommy, which was his first recurring TV role, wasn’t easy.

“It was both a real challenge and a real gift. The beauty of this form is you have six hours to develop the character,” he explained.

“What you see of Tommy in the first episode is not the same as what you see in the sixth. We come to understand what he and his fellow soldiers went through in World War I. They saw all sorts of horrors without any counselling or pharmaceutical aid. Now they are just trying to get through life.”

:: Peaky Blinders is available on DVD on October 21.
