Q Awards: Goulding Leaves Bowie In Shade

David Bowie was the big loser at the Q Awards – the rock legend did not win a single prize, despite being nominated for six.

The 66-year-old, who this year released his first single and album for a decade, was beaten by Ellie Goulding in the best solo artist category.

It caps a brilliant couple of months for the 26-year-old Burn singer who recently picked up her first UK number one.

Goulding told Sky News that the award was a “really special one, I didn’t even expect to be nominated, so I feel quite surprised”.

The awards at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel are voted for by readers of the influential music magazine.

Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro were awarded the best album gong for their double record Opposites, with lead singer Simon Neil saying it was a brilliant achievement.

Neil added “People say it doesn’t really matter, but it certainly makes you feel good, so we don’t turn our noses up at it.”

The annual ceremony also dished out a number of lifetime achievement awards – Robbie Williams, who was named the Q Idol, said he was “genuinely chuffed” with the honour.

He said: “I’m 40 next year and I’ve been around for loads and loads of years, and people still deem me important enough to roll me out and get me here and give me an award, and for that I’m very, very grateful.”

Chrissie Hynde walked away with classic songwriter while the reformed 90s band Suede won the icon award.

Lead singer Brett Anderson told Sky News: “It’s nice to be recognised, 20 years after our first album it’s nice of people still to care.”

Perhaps the biggest shock of the afternoon saw Oxford-based group Foals beat off strong competition from Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons for best live act.

The group’s Yannis Philippakis said it was the best award to win, adding: “It’s like where there’s no trickery and it’s just the five characters in the band.

“We’re playing the best we’ve ever played, the energy is something I’ll treasure forever.”
