Producer Quincy Jones is suing Michael Jackson‘s estate and Sony Music Entertainment claiming he is owed millions in royalties and production fees on some of the singer’s greatest hits.
Jones, who produced some of Jackson’s most popular albums including Thriller, Bad and Off The Wall, has filed a $10m (£6.2m) breach-of-contract lawsuit over Jackson projects released after his death.
He claims that master recordings he worked on, including Billie Jean, Thriller and Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, were improperly re-edited to deprive him of royalties and production fees.
The lawsuit states Jones’ contracts called for him to have the first opportunity to re-edit or alter the songs, in part to protect his reputation.
Jones, who has won 27 Grammy Awards during his illustrious career, also alleges that he should have received a producer’s credit on the music in the film This Is It.
He has asked a judge to order Jackson’s estate to provide a full accounting of its proceeds to determine how much he is owed.
Jackson’s estate said it was saddened by the lawsuit.
“To the best of its knowledge, Mr Jones has been appropriately compensated over approximately 35 years for his work with Michael,” it said in a statement.
Sony Music Entertainment has so far made no comment.
