There is no time quite like Christmas for playing a classic board game after you’ve scoffed all the turkey, stuffing, Christmas pud and anything else that happens to be lying around.
But these days you don’t need to get the Monopoly board out only to find the whole family can’t all play because the boot has gone for a walk since last year. Many of the classic games are now available on your tablet. So we’ve rounded up some of the best to keep you and your family entertained this year.
Monopoly – iOS (£4.99), Android (£2.99)
Whether you are playing on Android or an iOS device, the Monopoly app lets you play the classic game from your tablet – buying, selling and trading the famous properties.
The two apps vary slightly depending on the platform you have, but both allow you to play with all the family as well as customise the game rules if you want to.
The iOS version offers a table-top mode and a teacher mode allowing you to get expert tips to help you win. You’ll also be able to connect to multiple devices to play head-to-head via Bluetooth or against three other players over Wi-Fi.
The Android version offers three levels of difficulty and you can save games in-progress if you need a break. You’ll also be able to change the game environment and number of players.
Risk – iOS (£4.99)
If you fancy your hand at world domination this Christmas, the Risk app will give you as good a challenge as you will get without leaving your house.
You can play with up to six players in the pass and play mode, and if you need to take a break from taking over Sweden, you can pause the game and return to where you left off.
There are three ways to play, including against the computer, around the board against all your family, or head-to-head against the one person you really want to beat by using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
You’ll also be able to play in the fixed rule set, or in the classic progressive rule mode to dominate the game in traditional Risk style.
Trivial Pursuit Master Edition – iOS (£2.99)
Christmas wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t split up in to teams to try and win all the coloured triangles by answering questions to complete your cheese in Trivial Pursuit.
There is a table-top mode so you can play with all your family and friends, rolling the dice by swiping so there will be no excuses for rolling again for a better score when you “accidently” drop those dice.
There are two modes – Pursuit and Classic – and you will be able to track your stats, customise your profile, set your time limits and create personalised difficulty levels to see how much general knowledge you really know.
Mr Ludo – iOS, Android (Free)
Inspired by the classic Ludo game, Mr Ludo puts a modern twist on the game, with the aim of the game to help him be the first out of the office against his colleagues.
There are six different environments, from tropical islands to outer space and you can play in real-time online with up to four players.
You’ll find leader boards to track your career progress, globally and against your Facebook friends, and there is an on-the-job training mode offering easy, medium and hard difficulties.
Mr Ludo also offers an Express Mode if you want a faster game, great for if the Christmas pudding is on its way, or if you just want to play all the games we have found and don’t have time for hours stuck on one.
