James Thurber’s short story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, followed a hapless daydreamer who drifted from fantasy to fantasy. So, it’s fitting that for the upcoming movie adaption, which stars Ben Stiller, the filmmakers brought in the Swedish psych-rockers Junip to create a fanciful new tune.

Junip kicks off “Far Away” with a cacophony of tuning instruments. Then, Sixties garage-rock drumming starts pounding away, picking up momentum, over the hazy, strings-laden background. Frontman José González’s voice is buried under waves of reverb, giving the whole song a drifting, hallucinatory texture.

On picking Junip for the album, Mitty film composer Theodore Shapiro told Rolling Stone, “José González’s voice has a dreamy quality that not only perfectly evokes Walter’s daydreams, but also the distant call in his head that galvanizes him into breaking out of his closed-down life and embarking on an epic journey. “

“Far Away” is from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: Music From and Inspired By the Motion Picture, out December 17th. The album also includes songs from Jack Johnson and Rogue Wave; even film co-star Kristen Wiig adds her vocals to a new mix of David Bowie‘s “Space Oddity. “
