Rapper and reality television star Benzino was shot on Saturday while on the way to his mother’s funeral and now his nephew is under arrest facing an intent to murder charge.
Benzino, who was born Raymond Scott, was driving southbound on Route 3 in Duxbury, Massachusetts as a part of his mother’s funeral procession, when his nephew, 36-year old Gai Scott pulled up alongside him and fired multiple shots into his vehicle according to WCVB in Boston.
After the shooting, Benzino’s “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” co-star Stevie J posted two photos of the rapper in the hospital on Instagram. In one pic, Benzino appeared to be sleeping in his hospital bed with his right bicep bandaged up and his right arm in a sling; his business partner Dave Mays was by his side. In the second pic, the rapper is sitting up and alert posing for a selfie with Stevie J.
WCVB is reporting that Benzino is being treated at a local area hospital with non-fatal injuries, while a rep for the rapper tells MTV News that he is in critical condition.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz issued a statement that confirmed that there has been “growing family tension” between Benzino and his nephew, who fired multiple shots into the rapper’s SUV shortly before noon yesterday. Both men, were headed to the funeral. “At some point when the cars were side by side, Gai Scott fired several shots into the red Dodge SUV being driven by Raymond Scott,” the statement read.
Gai Scott was arrested and charged with armed assault with intent to murder.
Benzino rose to fame as an owner of The Source magazine, a pioneering hip-hop publication. As a rapper, he put out a number of solo albums and group LPs with his groups Made Men and the Almighty R.S.O.
After moving on from The Source, Benzino started another magazine called Hip-Hop Weekly, but these days is most known for his role in the VH1 reality series “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” where his love life plays out on television for everyone to see.
