Tory MP Resigns As Aide After Escort Claims

A Conservative MP has resigned as a ministerial aide following allegations made by two Sunday newspapers.

Mark Menzies has quit as a parliamentary private secretary to International Development Minister Alan Duncan following an investigation into his personal life.

Mr Menzies denies the allegations in the Sun On Sunday and the Sunday Mirror.

He issued a statement on Saturday night, saying: “I have decided to resign as a PPS after a series of allegations were made against me in a Sunday newspaper.

“A number of these allegations are not true and I look forward to setting the record straight in due course.”

Sky’s chief political correspondent Jon Craig said: “I understand that the allegation is that he was seeing a Brazilian male escort. The young man, who is 23, is now back in Brazil.

“The papers each sent a reporter to interview him. He has made various claims about the time he spent with the MP and the Prime Minister has been told.

“The Sunday Mirror says Mr Cameron was stunned. I put that to a senior number 10 insider who said: ‘Well, he’s certainly aware of it.’

“So it’s embarrassing. One Fleet Street veteran said to me tonight: ‘It’s like going back to the 1990s.’”
