Tributes To Builder Killed In 'Axe Attack'

Tributes have been paid to a 27-year-old builder believed to be the victim of an alleged knife and axe attack at a pub near Plymouth early on New Year’s Day.

The man, named locally as Tanis Bhandari, died after the alleged attack at the Kings Arms in the village of Tamerton Foliot around 1.30am.

Police have arrested two Plymouth men, aged 20 and 21, on suspicion of murder.

A statement posted on the pub’s Facebook page described the incident as “a terrible attack” made on a “lovely group of people on the way home from a great night in our pub”.

“It was an unprovoked violent attack with tragic consequences. That I feel devastated is an absolute understatement.

“I wish all the families of those involved my deepest deepest sympathy, not that this will help them in any way now, but I wish I could turn back the clock so that these events would not occur.”

Lee Ryder added: “Can’t believe it, I grew up in the same village as Tanis, he’s always been a kind lad, you will truly be missed bud, my thoughts are with his family and may whoever done this get what he deserves.”

Sue Sutton-Smythe wrote: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the young men. Knowing some of them, I know they will support and comfort each other as much as is possible following this awful tragedy.”

Police were called to the scene between 1am and 1.30am by people reporting disorder and a man with a knife and an axe.

An axe was later recovered, with officers appealing for people who live in the area to check their gardens and bins for a missing knife.

Two other men were also taken to hospital with knife injuries but their conditions were not thought to be life-threatening.
