Harry Potter star in classic play

David Thewlis is taking the title role in the new TV adaptation of JB Priestley’s classic play An Inspector Calls.

The Harry Potter star, who played Remus Lupin in the hit films and made his name with a stand-out performance in Mike Leigh’s Naked, said he was “thrilled” to be taking part.

The cast for the BBC One show also includes Ken Stott and Miranda Richardson as Arthur and Sybil Birling, who receive a visit from the mysterious Inspector Goole who holds them to account for the death of a young woman.

It is part of a series of adaptations of classics of 20th century literature that also includes a version of Laurie Lee’s Cider With Rosie.

BBC Drama commissioning editor Lucy Richer said: “The mysterious and elusive Inspector Goole has fascinated audiences for generations and David Thewlis is the perfect actor to bring him to life. We’re delighted that he, Ken Stott and Miranda Richardson are heading up this stellar cast to bring one of the nation’s favourite stories to BBC One.”

Filming starts in Yorkshire next month with the show on air later this year.
