Kanye West gets sentimental on his new single “Only One,” as he channels his late mother, Donda, and sings about his daughter, North, in the lyrics. And the video for the track is just as personal.
Though it will air on TV when Yeezy appears on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Thursday afternoon (Jan. 29), a clip of the Spike Jonze-directed video hit the ‘net earlier in the day. It depicts ‘Ye not as a rap superstar, but as a father, gently taking Nori’s hand as they walk in an otherwise-empty field. It has the feel of a candid home movie.
In addition to dropping the video, Kanye also talked to Ellen about how marriage and fatherhood have changed him — as well as the fact that he and wife Kim Kardashian are “trying” to have more kids.
“I think I’m a better human being because of [Kim] and because of my daughter, and I have always someone to think about going home to,” he said. “Something for me to not only to be brave for what I want to do for humanity, but also to be more protective of myself for my family, because there’s things I’ve done in the past that were considered negative, but I was really jumping in front of the tank for other people, or for culture, in a way. So now, I always have to have that in my mind that I have a family that I have to protect, too.”
