Pharrell Williams, Lionel Richie and Nicki Minaj were among the big winners at the BET Awards.
The Happy singer cemented his winning year with two gongs for best video and best male R&B/pop artist.
Collecting his first award of the night, the singer and super-producer said: “This song became this whole thing with the people, thank you to the people who made videos and uploaded them, this song isn’t really mine anymore, it belongs to the people.”
He later presented All Night Long singer Lionel Richie with a lifetime achievement award as the 65-year-old performed a medley of his biggest hits to a star studded audience.
Speaking on stage as he accepted his gong, Lionel paid tribute to his former band The Commodores. “Thanks the Commodores, without them I would not be standing on this stage tonight. I honour my brothers for pushing me out and telling me to aim higher and higher.”
Nicki Minaj scored best female hip hop artist after performing her hit single “Pills and Potions” and her Young Money labelmates scored best group.
Lupita Nyong’o and Drake both also scored big prizes but did not attend the ceremony to accept them. The 12 Years A Slave actress won best actress while Drake won best male hip hop artist.
Other show highlights included a performance from Pharrell with Missy Elliot, as well as numbers by Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson and Iggy Azalea.
In a nod to the pizza delivery at the Oscars earlier this year, host Chris Rock won over the audience at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles by handing out chicken and waffles from legendary restaurant Roscoe’s to Snoop Dogg, Travis Barker, Paris Hilton and Lionel Richie.
The BET Awards 2014 air in the UK on Tuesday July 1 at 9pm on BET [Sky 187, Virgin Media 184 & Freesat 140].
