Band Aid 30 Single At Number One In Charts

Band Aid 30′s single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” has gone straight to number one in the UK charts.

More than 312,000 copies of the charity song have been sold, making it the year’s fastest-selling single, according to the Official Charts Company.

This means the track has outsold the rest of the year’s top five combined and sold the most copies since James Arthur sold 489,000 copies of his X Factor-winning song Impossible two years ago.

The host of stars who sing on the track, once again organised by Bob Geldof, include Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, One Direction, Rita Ora and Chris Martin.

A spokesman for the Official Charts Company said Band Aid 20 sold 200,000 each week for its first four weeks on sale and that it was possible Band Aid 30 could do better.

He added: “A physical version is set to be released in December, which means the track is still a serious contender for 2014′s official Christmas number one.”

The single was released online on 17 November and all proceeds from the sales go to the fight against the killer Ebola virus in west Africa.

It is the fourth time a version of the song has reached number one in the charts.

The news comes on the day Lily Allen revealed she rejected an offer to appear in the song because she thinks the project is “a bit smug”.

The 29-year-old singer told the Mail on Sunday’s Event magazine: “I got an email asking me to do it. It’s difficult to explain why I didn’t do it without sounding like a complete ****.

“I prefer to do my charitable bit by donating actual money and not being lumped in a with a bunch of people like that.”
