A senior police officer says a 16-year-old girl with mental health issues is in police custody because no NHS beds are available.
Assistant chief constable Paul Netherton, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said she was detained on Thursday night and sectioned on Friday lunchtime.
She should have been taken to hospital, but police were told there were no places for her.
He later added: “Custody on a Friday and Saturday night is no place for a child suffering mental health issues.
“Nurses being sourced to look after her in custody!?!”
Sky News reporter Sean Dilley said: “This isn’t just a police officer tweeting in their spare time, it’s a bold career move from someone of such seniority who will risk upsetting the Government.”
He added that in a phonecall with the police chief “you could almost hear his voice quavering with anger”.
