Cornwall school closes over 'armed gunman' threat

A primary school in Cornwall is closed as dozens of police launch a manhunt for a 60-year-old man they suspect may be carrying a firearm.

Police say they want to question Derrel Weaver following a domestic incident at Higher Widlake Farm, in Widegates, Cornwall, at around 9.30pm on Thursday.

Trenode Church of England Primary School was closed as a precaution following consultations with the police.

The school is expected to remain closed for most of the day and police have apologised to parents and local businesses.

“This decision was not taken lightly but public safety is our most important concern of the school and police,” a police spokesman said.

Members of the public who see Weaver have been asked not to approach him and call 999 immediately since it’s unclear if he is armed or not.

There remains a high police presence in the Widegates and wider Looe area with firearms officers and trained local officers dotted around the small village.

Superintendent Jim Pearce said: “There is currently significant enquiries on going to locate Mr Weaver and this includes the chance he may be in possession of a firearm.

“There is currently no suggestion that Mr Weaver is any risk to members of the public, but we need to locate him as soon as possible.

“There is already extensive work on going to contact and speak to Mr Weaver by trained police co-ordinators and this also remains on going.”
