Houses damaged in 'gas explosion'

Three houses have been extensively damaged in a suspected gas explosion with the roof blown off one.

The top half of one of the terraced homes on Sullivan Street near Infirmary Road in north inner city Dublin was completely destroyed in the incident.

It was the middle of the three homes worst affected in the explosion and it is believed to have been the source of the suspected gas leak.

A window frame from the property was also blown into the air with the force carrying it two streets away to the edge of a children’s playground just inside the Phoenix Park.

Local residents reported one man living on Sullivan Street was taken to hospital but no casualties were reported from the house were the explosion occurred.

Houses opposite the point of explosion were also damaged, with the front windows of one blown in.

Gardai said the alarm was raised at about 6.20pm and the sound of the explosion could be heard in the force’s nearby headquarters and further across the north inner city.

It is believed to have occurred in the attic or upper floor of the worst affected property.

Dublin Fire Brigade crews were tasked to the scene along with local gardai and gas specialists and a search of the premises was carried out.

Infirmary Road was closed to traffic following the incident.
