Jake Sims performed on the X Factor tonight following reports claiming he tweeted about drugs.
He appeared with fellow members of band Stereo Kicks to sing Backstreet Boys hit Everybody.
The 19-year-old was said to have posted messages about cannabis on Twitter last year before he auditioned for the ITV show.
Stereo Kicks were given positive feedback from judges Louis Walsh, Simon Cowell, Mel B and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.
Mel said: “I just love that song. You killed it boys.”
The theme for tonight’s show was Fright Night, with all the acts singing Halloween-related songs.
Ben Haenow was first to perform, with a version of AC/DC’s Highway to Hell which prompted Louis to tell him: “You are the real deal.”
Mel B was also impressed, saying: “It made me want to rush home to my husband, it was that hot.”
Lola Saunders appeared on the stage next to sing Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, which Louis described as “scarily good”.
Fleur East earned lukewarm praise for her take on Michael Jackson‘s Thriller. Cheryl told her: “One of the things I like about you is that you are an entertainer.”
Jack Walton performed Leona Lewis’s hit Bleeding Love. Louis said: “For me you are a small-room performer.”
Simon said: “You’ve got a future in the music business.”
Jay James’s rendition of Mad World came next, with his mentor Simon saying: “You are taking huge risks in front of millions of people and I want people to pick up the phone.”
Andrea Faustini sang Take That’s Relight My Fire in a bizarre gold costume including a painted face which Simon described as “one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen on this show”.
Lauren Platt’s verson of Dark Horse by Katy Perry was described by Simon as “a very, very good choice of song” .
A red-eyed Paul Akister performed Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf which surprised Louis. He said: “I wasn’t expecting that.”
But Simon said: “I think you’ve got to lighten up and start enjoying what you are doing.” However, Paul hit back saying he thought the criticism was “unfair”.
Only The Young came next with a take on The Monster Mash.
Simon said: “This is the first time I think I saw you as the group you really are.”
Stevi Ritchie closed the show with Music Of The Night from musical Phantom of the Opera and he received a standing ovation from Simon and Cheryl.
Cheryl said: “I absolutely adore you and I couldn’t be happier that you got to sing that song.”
One act will be voted off the contest later in the show.
